Last survivor of Hindenburg disaster: 'The air was on fire'

Wow, a Hindenburg disaster survivor lived to the 21st century, amazing. An interesting thing is that the Hindenburg disaster virtually ended the era of lighter than air luxury travel but the Titanic disaster didn't end the era of luxury ocean going cruse ships. People are still killed on cruse ships but the only time you see Blimps is during a sports show.

The main reason why blimps aren't used anymore is that they are very , very , very slow if you compared them to a jet. They're also limited in lifting power.
Main reason? Jets weren't even imagined in 1937 when the Hindenburg crashed. Lighter than air ships were able to cross the Atlantic in comfort in 2 1/2 days in the 30's while Steamships averaged about 5 days. That makes airships very, very fast compared to their rivals. The relative comfort of a lighter than airship in the 30's makes today's Jet travel seem like flying inside a box in the cargo hold.

They don't make them today, too slow compared to jets.

Unlike cruise ships, which until today fulfil a function or to put it another way, there is nothing faster to transport people by sea.

I was referring to your question why we have ocean liners but not blimps anymore.:)
