Leader of the Free World? I don't think so

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/16/us/politics/trump-budget-spending-cuts.html

So Trump increases funding to the military while he slashes funding to the State Department. What is the purpose of the State Department? To represent our interests abroad. How do we "lead" the free world when our President slashes funds for foreign diplomats and the UN? How do we diplomatically engage our allies and opponents with a shadow State Department?

Trumps answer seems to be to resolve issues with the military rather than diplomacy. The same man who vowed to avoid foreign entanglements has decimated the agency that allows us to resolve conflicts without committing our troops

You're just looking or problems. The state dept. probably stood to lose funding and Trump made a BUSINESS move. He's not a politician. I like it.

How is weakening our global influence good business?

please tell me, where in any of our official foundation documents does it state that the U.S. and it's President are responsible to be the leaders of the "free world" . I can only find where the Pres. is responsible to the people of the U.S. , no more, no less.

"to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind,"

Charter of the United Nations | United Nations

.............................
  1. To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace;

..............................
  1. The Security Council shall consist of fifteen Members of the United Nations. The Republic of China, France, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America shall be permanent members of the Security Council. The General Assembly shall elect ten other Members of the United Nations to be non-permanent members of the Security Council, due regard being specially paid, in the first instance to the contribution of Members of the United Nations to the maintenance of international peace and security and to the other purposes of the Organization, and also to equitable geographical distribution.

ummmmmh......... newsflash.........The United Nations is NOT the United States. We participate with other nations, not fund and resource everyone else that wants to be our ally (NATO)

We are one of five permanent members of the Security Council as spelled out by this document. You asked.

Guess what Colonel? We are
We have assumed that role for 70 years

Our founders never dreamed we would be as powerful a nation as we are

I know we've "assumed" that role. And we've done so, to the detriment somewhat for our own good. We've mandated charity through legislation which flies directly in the face of the definition of charity. And, for us to use that title for the U.S. President is arrogant in my opinion.

No country in the world is our equal in terms of power or economic influence

Until Trump sold out to Putin
Please explain how Trump "sold out" to Putin.

Executive Branch is responsible for foreign policy.......bet you knew that
Apparently the 9th Circuit and a handful of District Court judges disagree with you, numb nuts.

So.....just because we are the world's largest economy (for now) doesn't not automatically make our country the "leader"of the free world. Have you ever been outside of the U.S.

Does anyone honestly believe there is any department in the federal government which includes defense that does not have waste in it that could be cut? Everyone talks about controlling government spending yet as soon as someone puts out a proposal to do it it's all you can't cut this you can't cut that this department or that one is special and should be untouchable.

And every other country has a foreign policy....so what? and I'm betting theirs doesn't say "do whatever the Americans tell us to do when they ask".

For first time in my memory, our president s NOT the leader of the Free World. Rather, he is the leader of the White, Racist World.

The leader of the free world meets Donald Trump

The President receives all foreign Ambassadors. This clause of the Constitution, known as the Reception Clause, has been interpreted to imply that the President can be granted broad power over all matters of foreign policy by Congress,[24] and to provide support for the President's exclusive authority to grant recognition to a foreign sovereign

So the president can "recognize" a foreign sovereignty, I'm betting the heads of state of the other 190+ countries of the world have a similar authority. Does it make them the leader of (insert power wielding title here) of the world?

It is one of the founding documents that established the USA as one of 5 leading countries. Our ratification of the UN Charter was well within the boundaries setup by our Constitution. Being the strongest of the three Free Nations it is the founding document that establishes the US as the leader of the free world. Well we were the leader, now looks like we're floundering.
