Several years ago in Warner Robins, Ga - between 2 government buildings where they wanted to build a parking lot - they found a tiny rare frog in a small stream that ran between the 2 buildings. All plans for the parking lot were abandoned. The govt came in to help save the frogs - they bought in brick and mortar to help build walls on both sides of the stream. They brought in bulldozers to clear the ground on both sides of the stream.

The powdered mortar, dripping hydraulic fuel, and gas from the bulldozers leaked into the stream and killed all the frogs. AFTER this the government built a parking lot WITH a tiny bridge over where the stream was once located (no water now) and placed a huge statue....dedicated to the frogs.

Most extinction is the direct result of that species' over-specialization. While I've nothing against "save x animal" campaigns, it should be understood that /all/ of such species will eventually go extinct because the planet itself has zero sympathy for their environmental needs.
