I just wanna brag on my home city a moment. Of all the police outrages lately...our people didnt riot. Im downtown now...and I see people of all races talking and hugging. Cops and young black men chatting and helping each other.

We are a special city.

Some of our nations earliest founders landed at "Charles Town"
The Revolutionary War was partly fought here and we helped defeat the British.
The Civil War devastated this city and we recovered...and were better for it.

We defeated Blackbeard the pirate and his blockade.
We overcame a magnitude 8.5 earthquake.
We were devastated by Cat 5 Hurricane Hugo.
Our city nearly burned down in the Great Fire.
We had the civil rights era and a local judge led integration nationwide.
We had the Cocaine Cowboy era in the 80s where drug wars and prostitution made downtown nearly uninhabitable.
Our city has been bombarded by the Brits, French, Indians and the US military itself...and of course...multiple beatings by mother nature.

Through it all....Charleston persevered and has been named the #1 tourist city in the WORLD by Conde Naste and ranked as a top 10 American city by various other groups.

And our diverse population seems to get along so much better than anywhere else ive ever been. Despite racially charged national incidents....the 750, 000 people around the tri county area arent rioting. We are consoling each other.

A tragic day. But im proud how my city is once again reacting with peace and integrity. And our LOCAL black leaders have had a lot to do with that too.

Glad to hear it, hope it continues !

We see it daily here...so much so that its not really an issue. We had the worst police video...maybe ever. No riots.

The spirit of this historic old city....seems almost like its long ago gone through the racial growing pains and 99% of our people just dont do it anymore. We just get along.

The cop in the "worst police video" wasn't given special protection from the law. Had he been....you'd have had protests.

The irony of Bucs congratulating himself for his part in maintaining racial harmony in Charleston is almost too much to take.

Was it a cop that went in and shot those eight people? No, it was a whack job kid, so why would people riot?

Because its OBVIOUSLY a racially motivated massacre. Unlike you...some people care about the victims more than just if a cop is involved.

Neither were the cops in Ferguson or Baltimore. They rioted.

Congratulating? More like just being proud of this city and all the people in it. Our local black leaders could teach the national ones some things about integrity. Our whole city could.

Man bites dog bro

Are you saying cops are men and the people they police are dogs? Hmmmm. I cant agree with your analogy.

People are people. No matter their place in society.

You're smarter than this

Yes but you arent. You said "man bites dog" is a story but "dog bites man" isnt...in a conversation about cop shootings vs regular shootings.

So...the only interpretation is you saying the cops are the men....and regular folks the dogs.

Please explain...

Thats not the only explanation. A criminal crimeing is expected. A cop crimeing is not.

There for when a cop shoots someone its always going to be more news about it since cops arent supposed to (in theory).

The phrase man bites dog is a shortened version of an aphorismin journalism which describes how an unusual, infrequent event (such as a man biting a dog) is more likely to be reported as news than an ordinary, everyday occurrence with similar consequences, such as a dog biting a man. An event is usually considered more newsworthy if there is something unusual about it; a commonplace event is less likely to be seen as newsworthy, even if the consequences of both events have objectively similar outcomes.

Yes. It is very uncommon for a cop to commit a wrongful act. You're right. I stand corrected.

Slow down there capt assumption. Its not uncommon, the black community has known about this for some time. Its just that now there are more cameras catching them in the act.

Its only surprising to white people

No...you said it yourself. Its uncommon.

1, 000, 000 cops in America. A few dozen really bad videos a year. Heck...even 10, 000 bad ones would only be 1%.

You're right. Its very uncommon. Not sure what all the outrage is about.

Man bites dog is the appropriate analogy.
