Lois Lerner to take the 5th. Again.

[

If she claims in a prepared statement that nothing was going on and then claims the fifth, that's lying to congress, for which she can be held in contempt, and obstruction of justice. If the Republicans were really out to get at the facts they'd have her in jail right now. I don't know what they're up to other than trying to make some kind of show of it. It's clear that the IRS is breaking several privacy laws and abusing their authority. There is evidence that it is being used to destroy people's ability to chose the candidates they want.

Several rights are being breached here, and that is why Lerner plead the 5th.

Freedom from illegal search and seizure.
Freedom of expression
Freedom of thought
Rights to free elections
Protection from discrimination
No punishment without laws

"Waahhhhh, I didn't get my fraudulant tax exemption, I'm being oppressed."

Sorry, you don't have a "privacy" right when you apply to the government and claim to be a Social Welfare Agency when in fact, you are a political organization.

This is what the discussion is about. If you are claiming to be a social welfare agency but you intend to do politics and hide who your donors are- YOU ARE COMMITTING FRAUD!!!

If anything, the IRS went easy on them. They just let them know that they needed to prove they were a social welfare agency (they couldn't) or otherwise told them they didn't qualify.

Oh, Gosh, they actually applied the LAW as written!

IRS apologizes for targeting conservative groups
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service apologized Friday for subjecting Tea Party groups to additional scrutiny during the 2012 election, but denied any political motive.

Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt groups, said organizations that included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their applications for tax-exempt status were singled out for additional reviews. Her remarks, which came at an American Bar Association gathering, were first reported by the Associated Press.

White House spokesman Jay Carney on Friday afternoon called the IRS action "inappropriate" and said the Obama administration supports a full investigation, suggesting the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration would have jurisdiction.

Lerner said the practice, initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati, was wrong.

"It was an error in judgment, and it was not appropriate, but that's what they did," Lerner told reporters. She declined to talk about how many employees were involved and whether there would disciplinary action. "I think they were insensitive, or less sensitive than they should have been."

The error, she said, was in assuming that any group with "tea party" or "patriot" in its name necessarily needed more scrutiny for political activity just because of its name. About 300 groups that had applied for tax-exempt status were put into a "bucket" of cases needing further scrutiny, and of those, about a quarter had tea party affiliations.

That problem was compounded when examiners asked more intrusive questions in what's known as a "development" process. "Some of the development letters that were send were far too broad and include things like asking for the organization's donor list, which is not generally what we do," Lerner said.

They're simply asking for the same exemption that the NAACP gets. Instead they have been harassed into silence.

You support fascism if you believe this is right.

The NAACP has been around for over 100 years, and it really does LEGITIMATE social welfare work. It has undergone 100 years of vetting by Republicans and Democrats alike.

Unlike "Tea Party Patriot on 9/12", which was started last week.

What triggered this was the Citizen United Decision allowing millionaires to funnel money into groups without leaving a paper trail. The IRS was dealing with the problem as best they could, which isn't good enough, given a lot of the shennanigans that went on despite their best efforts last year.

The NAACP is a political action group. They have been rendered irrelevant by the passage of time and the improvement of civil rights in this country. They attempt to remain relevant by supporting Democrat causes and supporting Democrat candidates.

End of discussion.

Ha! Lerner has said since last summer she would testify if granted immunity.

If the truth is really what you, I and Issa, and the rest of America want's

Why won't Issa grant her immunity?

????? It's coming up on a year soon...and NADA.

I lifted this from a blog and post it here since it says exactly what I would say.

On Super Bowl Sunday, Obama was interviewed by Bill O’Reilly, saying unequivocally that there was, “not even a smidgen” of corruption at the IRS, even though the so-called investigation was still supposedly underway.

In February of last year, Obama referred to his regime as having ‘the most transparent administration in history.” If there is not a “smidgen” of corruption, and if this is “the most transparent administration in history,” and if Lois Lerner has done nothing wrong, then why is she not revealing what she knows?

When Issa trots out the evidence he has against her she will be looking at a long prison sentence. So she would be better off cooperating now.
But nice to see you admit she is a criminal.

And after all, even Dear Leader has said there is no smidgeon of corruption. :nono: ( they are all just phoney scandals, ya know. ) Benghazi etc.

Lerner wanted immunity in return for her testimony, which is always the sign of a “phony scandal.”

Probably none.

But she lost her job, that's the point.

So really, it's not like they can threaten her with much of anything else at this point, is there?

Your ignorance of what really happens in the world you live in, continues to amaze, Joe! Lois Lerner was placed on administrative leave...which means we tax payers got to keep paying her salary and benefits while she sat on her ass at home. Lerner didn't resign until September, four months AFTER the story broke. She resigned with her pension and benefits intact...even as she refused to answer questions about what happened in her department at the IRS. In essence we gave Lois a four month paid vacation for her actions! Isn't the Federal Government wonderful!!!

What they need to threaten Lois Lerner with is jail time.

Um, yeah, under what pretext?

For refusing to participate in their dog and pony show.

They really have NO evidence that she actually committed any crimes. None. Zip. Zero. Everything she did can be reasonably argued to be within the scope of her job.

Congress doesn't even have the authority to throw her in prison.

And frankly, guy, I'm just not seeing what the upset is. The Teabaggers tried to scam the IRS, the IRS caught them doing it. That's what the IRS is supposed to do.

The IRS is supposed to be non-political. They are not supposed to allow themselves to be used by ANY political party or Administration to punish political opponents. The reason that the Tea Party groups are "upset" is that Lerner singled them out for extra scrutiny based not on what they had DONE but because they had the words "Patriot" or "Tea Party" in their names.

What's shocking about what was done by Lerner and it appears some members of the Obama White House is that they decided that the Supreme Court's decision on Citizen's United shouldn't apply and decided to go outside of the law and halt conservative money from being put into political action groups simply by delaying approval of those groups with a series of questions designed to slow down the process. They didn't reject the applications...they deliberately stalled them...some for years.

When you have an Administration that skirts Congress's authority with Executive Orders and skirts the Supreme Court's authority with operations like the Lerner run IRS department...you've got an Administration that feels they know better than both the rule of law and the Constitution. That by itself is scary but when you couple that attitude with the level of incompetence that the Obama White House typically shows...it becomes a threat to the nation.

What they had done?

If that's the case the NAACP needs to be audited again and again till they give up.

They're political plain and simple.

Issa does not have the right to badger the witness. Nor does he have the right to deny the ranking member of his committee the right to speak.

Issa wasn't badgering and he didn't deny Cummings the right to speak. Cummings didn't speak...he threw a temper tantrum over who knows what. My guess is he didn't take his medication.

If she didn't do anything, then why was she asking for immunity before she was to testify again?

Taking the 5th might not be an admission of guilt, but asking for immunity....

Prove it or shut it.

The only criminal is Issa himself ,his own partisan investigation has found no corruption in the IRS(scandal)wasting millions of dollars of taxpayer money .
The definition of insanity is repeating the same action over and over again and expecting to get a different result
Crazy man crazy

He forgot to say he WISHES it was over...far from it.

That is what the grandstanding was all about with that creep Cummings yelling like the twerp he is. They are trying to erect a wall...it isn't going to work. WE the people demand the IRS be investigated AND those responsible (all the way up to the WhiteHouse that ordered it), be held responsible and punished.

I agree that the left won't get any traction. If there's anything that unifies Americans it's the dislike of the IRS. Now with increased power over our healthcare decisions, people will support the Republicans in this. They need to be reeled in big time and the puppet masters need to pay.

Not if the Dems can repeat the mantra that there is no corruption and all of this is partisan fighting. And Issa is an asshole and a racist.
Cummings' entire rant was staged to attempt to shut down the committee. If the GOP were really smart they would remove Issa and appoint Trey Gowdy chairman.

Yes, if you put the words "Tea Party" on a form that says "Social Welfare Agency", that will probably indicate that you are trying to commit FRAUD.

Just like Abdul is more likely to get a cavity search from the TSA than Granny.

So these groups were trying to fraudently collect money, and because the IRS said they had to actually prove that they were "Social Welfare Agencies",

The SCOTUS decision was never meant to allow contributions to be hidden through Social Welfare agencies, and it was left up to the IRS to determine which ones were legitimate.

Guy, sorry, Obama isn't anywhere near the level of DEADLY incompetence Bush exhibited...

3000 dead on 9/11 ("You've covered your ass!")
4500 dead in Iraq (Whoops, Wrong Country)
1200 dead in Katrina (well, it's just colored people!)
