He is there to kill as many men, women, and children as it takes to keep Assad in power.
This is going to blow back in his face. Most of the Muslims in the Russian sphere of influence are Sunnis, and by aligning himself with Assad and Iran, Putin is teaming up with Shias. You can expect some Sunni terrorism in Russia as a result of Putin's intervention.
