Marijuana News

I seriously dont understand this topic when we live in a medication nation but they side eye goes toward Weed? Prescription pills is killing off a whole generation and we're putting weed under intense scrutiny?

Something is wrong with us
Yes, indeed, people can't think and pot isn't going to improve the situation. Prescription drugs have a set dosage for the ailment. You're thinking of the abuse that kills people, millions benefit greatly for them.

The problem with pot, and why it's probably still not accepted, is that it opens up the drug world to you. It's natural to try something more intense. Booze can do that with some but most people don't get that carried away with it and probably most adults drink to one degree or another. Pot seems to alter your personality like booze doesn't. The next day, if you don't have a hangover, you back to who you were.

Why Nicotine is a Gateway Drug

A new study in mice shows how tobacco products could act as gateway drugs, opening the door to use of illicit drugs. Nicotine, the researchers found, makes the brain more susceptible to cocaine addiction. The finding suggests that lowering smoking rates in young people might help reduce cocaine abuse.

Scientists have long recognized that cigarettes and alcohol raise the risk for later use of illicit drugs like marijuana and cocaine. In a recent national survey, over 90% of adult cocaine users between the ages of 18 and 34 had smoked cigarettes before they began using cocaine. Researchers suspected that nicotine exposure might increase vulnerability to cocaine. However, no one had identified a biological mechanism. A team of scientists, led by Dr. Eric Kandel at Columbia University and supported by NIH’s National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), set out to investigate...'

Alcohol as a gateway drug: a study of US 12th graders.

Author information

Abstract
BACKGROUND:
The Gateway Drug Theory suggests that licit drugs, such as tobacco and alcohol, serve as a "gateway" toward the use of other, illicit drugs. However, there remains some discrepancy regarding which drug-alcohol, tobacco, or even marijuana-serves as the initial "gateway" drug subsequently leading to the use of illicit drugs such as cocaine and heroin. The purpose of this investigation was to determine which drug (alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana) was the actual "gateway" drug leading to additional substance use among a nationally representative sample of high school seniors.

METHODS:
This investigation conducted a secondary analysis of the 2008 Monitoring the Future 12th-grade data. Initiation into alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use was analyzed using a Guttman scale. Coefficients of reliability and scalability were calculated to evaluate scale fit. Subsequent cross tabulations and chi-square test for independence were conducted to better understand the relationship between the identified gateway drug and other substances' use.

RESULTS:
Results from the Guttman scale indicated that alcohol represented the "gateway" drug, leading to the use of tobacco, marijuana, and other illicit substances. Moreover, students who used alcohol exhibited a significantly greater likelihood of using both licit and illicit drugs.

CONCLUSION:
The findings from this investigation support that alcohol should receive primary attention in school-based substance abuse prevention programming, as the use of other substances could be impacted by delaying or preventing alcohol use. Therefore, it seems prudent for school and public health officials to focus prevention efforts, policies, and monies, on addressing adolescent alcohol use.

LOL, pothead logic. Adolescent drinking may lead to pot. But pot's OK.

Who said that? Nobody said pot was OK for adolescents, so now you have to make up shit because you asked for credible links.... I gave you scientific un biased credible links.... & you thought I was just stating opinion... like YOU just did.

LOL.

Scientific links? Like they all agree? I didn't say you claimed pot was ok for kids, you proved my point. Pot fucks up your brain in ways alcohol doesn't. You can't really sober up unless you quit for a while. Your article is saying that adolescent drinking leads to pot use, which leads to harder drugs, like I said.

It is a less dangerous drug. It is only by the lobby of the alcohol industry that that substance is legal and flows by the millions of gallons without restraint.

Marijuana never caused anyone to want to fight with anyone else. It is though, the single greatest reason Doritios and Cheetos cannot be made fast enough.

Legalize it, control it, tax it, keep it away from children. Its way past time to do this.

Marijuana is nice stuff, but one should know how to use it. Look, how many alcoholics shuffle around. The thought alcohol would solve their problems but it just added another.

Alcohol is addictive, MJ has not been proved to be so. MJ can create a psychological dependence, but there is no physical withdrawal associated with stopping after habitual use as there is with tobacco, alcohol, opiates, barbiturates and stimulants.

Mexicans 2-1 against marijuana legalization...

Two-thirds of Mexicans against decriminalizing marijuana: Poll
Nov 10, 2015: Two-thirds of Mexicans are against decriminalizing marijuana, according to an opinion poll published on Tuesday, just days after a Supreme Court ruling that opened the door to an eventual legalization.
Some 66 percent of people polled in the telephone survey by El Universal newspaper opposed the legalizing the drug. But 63 percent said they backed a wide-ranging debate on marijuana legislation in Mexico, which has suffered a decade of vicious drug violence that has killed tens of thousands. Last week, Mexico's Supreme Court ruled to allow four plaintiffs to grow and smoke pot recreationally in a decision that could open the door to legalization.

However, even if it comes, any legalization is still likely years away. It would take four more consecutive decisions of the same kind, or eight of the 11 permanent justices to agree, for the Mexican Supreme Court's ruling to set an official precedent and force the government to review the law. On Monday, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said he was not personally in favor of legalization as he believed it could lead people to taking harder drugs. However, he asked the Interior Ministry to bring together specialists, including academics, doctors and sociologists, to debate the future of weed regulation.

El Universal's poll was the first nationwide survey on the debate published in a major newspaper since the Supreme Court decision, and was conducted between November 6-7. El Universal said it had interviewed 1,000 people, and that the poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent. Well over 100,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico since 2007. Some people think marijuana legalization in Mexico and the United States could eventually lead cartels to stop selling the drug.

I didn't switch anything around asshole. I don't need to. I didn't say anything incorrect, pot is a gateway to harder drugs, it opens one up to the drug world. You tried to obfuscate by saying minors drinking alcohol leads to pot as if that was a good excuse.

Dumb stoner bastard.

LOL. And I said that alcohol & nicotine are the first gateway drugs. At first glance it looks like my quote was attributed to you in # 64. Doesn't matter, studies have shown that b4 pot usage- the legal drugs usually start the fire. But you go on & blow off science like any other rwnj.

The prohibition of MJ opens the door to the criminal element selling drugs. If that is what is meant by it being a gateway drug, that is correct. But the high created by the ingestion of MJ is greatly different than that provided by opiates or stimulants.

Pot is not addictive, thus sellers would rather have buyers addicted than simply seeking to partake in their habit. Thus, teens can seek to buy MJ and find themselves faced with a sales pitch from a dealer who claims to be short on MJ, but willing to let a regular enjoy another drug for free, at first.

Thus we see crack and crank being introduced to the novice, week-end user, who finds this new drug to be really cool, exciting and leaving him or her wanting more.
