Math teacher escorted out by police, set to be fired for opposing planned parenthood

Planned Parenthood is an oxymoron: If it was an honest operation, it would be called Unplanned Pregnancy.

Wow. Glenn Beck's rants have gotten even more radical.

Lets clarify. He was suspended and put on paid leave BEFORE the cops showed up. The cops had nothing to do with that. They simply got a call to do a security-standby, meaning, an employee is being fired or asked to leave, and to prevent any chance of violence or problems (from either side), employers regularly ask the police to come standby during the employee's exit. Thats all this was, but of course, Beck and the right are trying to paint the cops as some sort of politically correct SS escorting conservative teachers out of classrooms. Disgusting spin.

Now, as for WHY he was fired or suspended...sure, thats contraversial. BUT, let me refer to the countless threads where right wingers have said if it is a local issue, leave it local. To be consistent, wouldnt right wingers on this board who dont live in Oregon need to ignore this story, since its in Oregon??? Just asking for consistency.

Wow!!! But some teachers can do far worst(although I think he did the right thing) and they still have their jobs:evil:

Sounds like this teacher crossed the line. He has a right to his views, but he can't block a presentation by Teen Outreach Program.

Lol, would you feel the same if a religous teen program wanted to speak?

He was insubordinate in doing so. Thats why he is being fired. I believe he is free to express his views in class- IF and only if they are related to the subject matter. Remember right wingers hate left wing teachers preaching their gospel in class. But, I think if this teacher's opposition to planned parenthood is part of a related topic he is tasked with teaching, then fine, that other view should absolutely be allowed.

But to block entry of a group that his bosses approved, or to try and stop his students from attending it? Nope. Cant do that. And, to organize a protest AT the school board meeting? He is a member of that school. That would be like a cop organizing a protest at the Police Headquarters. He cant do that, it is insubordinate, and 100% certainly would be against dept policy to display his position within that group while protesting.

This teacher had a line he knew about, and he crossed it.

Now Beck and his cult want to twist a headline to make the cops sound like they were partly at fault for this? Disgusting. Fuck 'em, cant wait to watch their misery as they all become more irrelevant with each passing election.

Well your different, most liberals want to block anything religous from schools.

School districts have school boards. For any group to make a presentation in a classroom would need approval. Parents and taxpayers can attend any board meeting and voice their views.

This teacher decided that his views trump the district's, the board and ultimately the parents and taxpayers. He has every right to his views. But he can't stop someone from making a presentation.

Diss is a staunch Roman Catholic and blocked two Planned Parenthood workers from entering his classroom in September because, he said, they lacked proper identification.
Planned Parenthood is a partner in the Portland school district’s Teen Outreach Program, aimed at preventing teen pregnancy, and funded by a federal Department of Health and Human Services grant, according to the Oregonian.
“I think, deep down, it’s because of my views,” Diss told the newspaper. “And that it’s much more important for them to have Planned Parenthood in the schools than to have a really dedicated teacher who really teaches math well and goes the extra mile and does a whole bunch with the kids.”
…junior Ty’sha Harrell said “When he does talk about it, he does have really good views and everything, sometimes he goes too deep into it. He brings religion into it.”
Diss told the newspaper there was a misunderstanding in the reference to 82nd Avenue, a known hub for prostitution, but admitted to talking about Planned Parenthood and his religious beliefs in class.
In a statement to KGW, the school district said it does not “discuss the nature of personnel issues and actions out of respect for the individual.”
“But I can tell you that we respect the rights of all employees to their own political, religious, social and other beliefs and affiliations and expect all employees to conduct themselves professionally in their work, most especially with students,” the statement said

He is a teacher in a secular school system in a secular country, a school that is funded by the State: a secular government. He has no right to impose his religious beliefs on his students. What he is doing is way out of line; I’m surprised they kept him on as long as they did. He should be teaching in a private, religious school. There are plenty of them in Oregon. His religious views have nothing to do with his job. He should not be discussing his religious and not even his political views to his students. As a teacher, his role is to remain impartial and to keep his personal religious opinions to himself.

If he feels so strongly about Planned Parenthood why is he teaching math in an institution that doesn't support his position. Let me guess - for a paycheck.
Blocking entry to Planned Parenthood speakers invited by the school would be insubordination in anybody's books - he needs to find a place to teach that agrees with him. countless abstinence only curriculum in the country - he could find one easy and stop being a sellout!

Okay I see where your coming from, a religous group wouldn't have a chance to get in, but it's okay to teach kids our kids abortion isn't killing a living baby.

The teacher is free to express his displeasure to the administration, but he isn't free to stop the presentation from taking place.

As for the police, there is nothing unusual about that either. A few years ago at my job they laid off about 20 people and had security present while HR was delivering the news to the affected individuals. It's a precaution to make sure nobody becomes violent or threatening when being informed they are being let go.

Planned Parenthood school presentations do not talk about abortion; they talk about birth control. They DO NOT give advice on abortion. Just because they do abortions, that does not mean they go into schools to "teach our kids abortion isn't killing a living baby." They don't 'teach' them anything about abortion, they teach them about preventing an unwanted pregnancy.

Every school has that one nutty teacher. It's just part of growing up.

Preventing a unwanted pregnancy is abortion. So esmaranda I would disagree. Abortion to the left is their #1 concern.

I am sure that is not what they teach or even talk about. But carry on. Planned Parenthood is the BEST way of preventing abortions. Birth control and education can prevent a girl from putting herself in that position. Why don't you think instead of emoting?

Not going along to get along will have consequences within ANY organization.
