A 12-year-old girl is recovering after a neighbor accidentally shot her as she rode by his house with her family, Orlando police said Monday.

Ventura Santos Mateo, 60, was in his garage on Le Mesa Street Friday about 7:45 p.m. showing a friend how to clean his handgun when he fired a .380-caliber round toward the street, investigators said.

Mateo had been holding the Sig Sauer pistol above his waist and pulling back the slide when the accident happened, officers said.

The girl was in the front passenger seat of a Dodge, her younger brother in the rear, when the bullet went through her door and hit her in the right upper arm.

Her father didn't realize that she had ben shot until he pulled into his driveway about a block away in a neighborhood near Orlando International Airport.

Surprised and distressed by the inadvertent shot, Mateo "nervously" shot again by accident, striking himself in the left thigh, police said.

The girl was treated and released at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.

Mateo was scheduled to undergo surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center and is expected to recover.

A police report stated that he wouldn't be charged because there was no criminal intent. But the agency said Monday that detectives are reviewing the case and have not made a decision.

Another dumbass who shouldn't own a firearm in the firstplace. My instructors screamed bloody murder at anyone in classes who had their trigger fingers inside the trigger-guard except when firing so it burned itself into our memory not to do that.
