I did read that in Italy 20% of diagnosed COVID-19 victims are classed as having "severe" illness -- hospitalized, respiratory support. But that may just be because a lot of people have very mild symptoms and are not diagnosed. Still only 2--3%+ death rate -- remarkably consistent, for diagnosed patients.

Clearly the disease is running free in both Italy and Iran now. It is unlikely we'll hear from Africa for awhile: when it gets there, they won't even notice. The death rate will be higher in Africa because they don't have respiratory support and hospitals and such, at least not for ordinary people. But I doubt they'll really notice, considering the much more serious diseases all around them. I could be wrong -- we'll see.

Your mistake is assuming houses (or buildings) in the USA are constructed similarly to those in China.

You are mistaken.

If the doors in question are any type of metal with any type of metal frame, they can in fact be welded or brazed shut. However, it might be easier just to park a heavy vehicle against them from the outside. furthermore, if I were trapped in side that building, there are 1000 other ways to escape. Walls and other structurally weak areas other than doors, such as cinder block walls can often be breached.
