March 2011, the Labor Force went UP, and the UE rate went DOWN.
April 2011, the Labor Force went UP, and the UE rate went UP
May 2011, the Labor Force went UP, and the UE rate stayed the same.
June 2011, the Labor Force went DOWN, and the UE rate went UP.
July 2011, the Labor Force went DOWN, and the UE rate stayed the same.
August 2011, the Labor Force went UP, and the UE rate stayed the same.
September2011, the Labor Force went UP, and the UE rate went DOWN
October 2011, the Labor Force went UP, and the UE rate went DOWN

A month ago, we joked when we said that for Obama to get the unemployment rate to negative by election time, all he has to do is to crush the labor force participation rate to about 55%. Looks like the good folks at the BLS heard us: it appears that the people not in the labor force exploded by an unprecedented record 1.2 million. No, that's not a typo: 1.2 million people dropped out of the labor force in one month! So as the labor force increased from 153.9 million to 154.4 million, the non institutional population increased by 242.3 million meaning, those not in the labor force surged from 86.7 million to 87.9 million. Which means that the civilian labor force tumbled to a fresh 30 year low of 63.7% as the BLS is seriously planning on eliminating nearly half of the available labor pool from the unemployment calculation. As for the quality of jobs, as withholding taxes roll over Year over year, it can only mean that the US is replacing high paying FIRE jobs with low paying construction and manufacturing. So much for the improvement.
At the same pace when GWB was president UE would be still over 9%

This month, the decline in the jobless rate wasnt a positive sign, as it primarily came from people dropping out of the labor force. The unemployment rate is calculated based on people who are without jobs, who are available to work and who have actively sought work in the prior four weeks. The actively looking for work definition is fairly broad, including people who contacted an employer, employment agency, job center or friends; sent out resumes or filled out applications; or answered or placed ads, among other things. The rate is calculated by dividing that number by the total number of people in the labor force. When the unemployed no longer count as part of the labor force, both numbers decline and the unemployment rate falls.

Well, remember we're talking two seperate surveys. Non farm payroll jobs went up 120,000, so that is (weak) job growth.
But yes, the Unemployment and Total Employment numbers were bad...for March. Overall, in the last year, there has been improvement and NOT just from people dropping out of the Labor Force. And don't listen to idiots like Durden at zerohedge. He misrepresented what happened in January...1.7 million were added to the population due to a statistical adjustment. Most were added to "Not in the Labor Force" but that does NOT represent people "dropping out" from Dec to Jan. The Labor Force increased in Jan due to 847,000 people being added to Employed and 339 subtracted from Unemployed.
March was bad, but the overall trend has been weakly positive.
I trade stocks and reduced my holdings a bunch just for that reason
