Learning a second language is good. Chinese is the language spoken by a substantial portion of the world and a country that is up and coming in the business world. Would make good sense to learn it.

Learning it is basically a requirement for entry into institutions of higher learning.

Most Chinese kids learn English just for entrance exams

In China today some schools start teaching English in kindergarten. Most start by the first or third grade. It is considered one of the most important classes throughout one's education.
