Nury Martinez announced Monday that she has resigned immediately as Los Angeles City Council President.

The announcement made in an email sent from her office comes after the release of a recorded October 2021 conversation involving Martinez and Councilman Kevin de León. They apologized Sunday for an attack on colleague Mike Bonin during the recorded conversation that included racist slurs by Martinez directed at Bonin's young son.

It is peculiar that in Canada we have a vastly different system of expectations, the only two groups you cannot offend are police and some politicians themselves.

I know of multiple police officers today who were openly racist in their teens and early twenties against blacks, Italians, Muslims, Jews and even Native Canadians. I watched one guy chasing an Italian guy with two other people, throwing punches while calling him a w*p, and he is making over $100k a year today as a cop. Ditto for another guy who was part of that group who is a fireman in Toronto. I heard them tell the most vile of anti-semetic and anti-Italian so-called jokes that their "circle" laughed heartily at.

Looking back, I'm starting to believe they were agent provocateurs trying to normalize this racism and "generating business" for the police before they were officially recruited. One fact is certain, they are not resigning, they are being handsomely rewarded for their racism (while trying to blame others).

The comments this woman made as a member of the community are beyond reproach. To a colleague at that.

Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez faced calls to step down after leaked audio revealed her making openly racist remarks, including those about a White colleague’s young Black son.
The Los Angeles Times first reported about the audio recording on Sunday of a conversation that happened back in October 2021 between Martinez, Councilmembers Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León and L.A. County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera while discussing the redrawing of districts.
According to the Times, Martinez criticized another colleague, Councilmember Mike Bonin, who is White, over the parenting of his Black son, who she said he treated like an "accessory."
After Bonin condemned the conversation for its "vulgar anti-Black sentiment," Martinez resigned as President of the Los Angeles City Council on Monday, but she reportedly will still retain her seat.

Martinez remarked on the toddler’s behavior during a Martin Luther King Day parade, saying that the float would have tipped over if she and the other women present didn’t step in to "parent this kid."

"They're raising him like a little White kid," Martinez said, according to the recording leaked on Reddit. "I was like, 'This kid needs a beatdown. Let me take him around the corner and then I'll bring him back."'
Martinez also called Bonin’s son "ese changuito," Spanish for "that little monkey."
