Yes, reason 4) of why people need to own and carry guns....when the government decides to kill a certain population of its citizens...see Mexico and the entire 20th century, in particular, Socialist states....

From Mexico...

Life And Death In A Gun Control Country Extrano s Alley a gun blog

Borderland Beat has an interesting report on the arrest of the former mayor of Iguala and his wife, suspects suspects in the murder of 42 teachers college students in the city of Iguala. (Link Fixed S)

Essentially, 42 young people left a two years teachers college to wave a cup and ask for money in Iguala. According to report, the mayors wife was to make a speech and was afraid the young people might detract from her star turn.

So the mayor reportedly told the Iguala police to round them up, kill them, and bury their bodies somewhere. Somewhere that has not been located, although dozens of clandestine graves have been opened.

What a lovely couple! :D
But still... If those students even had had guns, would they have been able to confront the police? To own a gun is one thing, to be able to save your life in a real gun fight with it is another.
Not that I am against guns, but there are situations where guns can help, and I don't see this story as the one.

If they had weapons they would have had a chance to fight back.
And you also have to take into account the difference in attitude the police would have if they hadnt outlawed guns in the first place.
I seriously doubt the mayor would have tried this with an armed populace.

There's a town in Mexico that was so over run by Criminal Narco Gangs that the Citizens went ahead and armed themselves even though Guns are outlawed.

The crimes against the citizens plummeted and the City and National officials decided to look the other way due to it's success.

Notice the "Authorities" are "warning them" but not doing anything about it:

Cherry Panda,

Let's say you were there...and you were armed with a concealed pistol....when the drug cartel killers showed up, and you saw the police aiding those killers...and knowing the history of this area where the police and the cartels are working together....you know nothing good is about to happen....if you tried to escape with some of your fellow students...and ran into one or more drug cartel members...you could possibly shoot your way out of the area...especially (Brain, I'm talking to you too...) if you had your pistol with one standard magazine loaded and 2 standard magazines on your belt...you wouldn't need to stand and fight...but having that pistol would make escaping a lot easier...but unarmed...you end up with the other 43 students....and see what happened to them....

You might survive by shooting your way clear....now imagine several others attempting the same thing with concealed carry pistols....

Lives could have been saved....as it was...43 people who were disarmed by their government were rounded up by government agents (the police) working alongside criminals from a drug cartel....the only people who had guns...the police...and the criminals...

Because they had no guns to fight back with....because their government told them that they were safer not having guns.....

Which is what gun control does...it disarms law abiding, innocent victims....and arms the government and the crimnals...

Cherry Panda....go to the sites I listed on the other thread...gunssavelives, thetruthaboutguns, the armedcitizen...they collect stories of law abiding, innocent victims using guns to fight off violent criminals...it happens every day, in all parts of the country...old people, women, handicapped people, injured people, lone individuals....fight off single and groups of violent criminals because they have guns with them....the stories will explain a lot....

The primary reason to own guns is the enjoyment of the shooting sports, and to enjoy the wonderful machines that are firearms – many are indeed works of art.

Further down the list of reasons to own guns is personal self-defense against attack by another private citizen.

Nowhere on the list is to 'protect' oneself from 'the government,' the notion is delusional, paranoid, ignorant, and idiotic.

Can you explain how gun ownership is going to protect you from our government? Hell, how about our militarized police force?

Just like that entire commentary.

One hears it from rightists all the time as a consequence of their ignorance and delusional paranoia. It's predicated on the inane myth they've contrived that the government is 'oppressive,' whatever that's supposed to mean.

Just as idiotic is the ridiculous notion that private citizens armed only with semi-automatic handguns and rifles are going to 'fight off' the United States military with a considerably more significant arsenal.

Last, the Second Amendment in no way 'authorizes' a minority of citizens who perceive the government as 'tyrannical' to 'take up arms' against the government, as that would violate the First Amendment rights of a majority of citizens to peaceably assemble and petition the government for a redress of grievances; the Second Amendment doesn't 'trump' the First.

Hmmmm...it seems to me that some backward ass tribesman in Afghanistan and Iraq have fought the U.S. to the point where they decided to bring our troops home....and yet our countrymen, with better education, better weapons and more reason to fight....would somehow just f*****g roll over and die if our government decided to reenact the 20th century of Germany, Russia, and China....

Considering we know that it has happened in the past, and can happen in the future...so we prefer to take precautions not based on surrendering our only tools for that fight...

You guys are the ignorant ones...and if you are ever told to get in the cattle cars to go to the work camps....please go quietly....your whining and crying may throw off the aim of our guys as they are fighting against the government troops....

You know nothing of history or our Constitution.
I suggest you educate yourself then get back with me.

Is there a single poster on this thread who has even a faintest idea of what life is like in Mexico?

The "authorities" at all levels are corrupt and only serve those with the most money and power.

I don't blame you for not going into details of how that would work out for you.

And you know nothing about how our government and Constitution work.

The Second Amendment does not 'authorize' a minority of citizens to 'unilaterally' decide to 'take up arms' against the Federal government based on a subjective, errant, and unwarranted perception that the government has become 'tyrannical.'
