The constitution was written as a framework for our government to define its structure and divisions of power. Later it was amended to define more specifically details about the individual rights of US citizens and the limitations that the government has to impede on those rights. Life liberty and the persuit of happiness, why do you think it constitutional for the government to control what a women does with her body and her unborn child? Abortion is a tragety and comes most often from desperation. It is not something that the Left champions or celebrates. The fight is for women’s rights and less government intervention for something that is a very personal decision that women and families need to make.

Well, that's the point. You can't drive a truck off the assembly line because they haven't put the engine in yet.

Most abortions are performed in the 8-12 week range, when the fetus is the size of a kidney bean and not viable.

I think this is where you are confused as to what Roe v. Wade entailed. Before Roe, women were getting abortions. Doctors performed the abortions and wrote something else down on the charts. The good ones did the job just fine and no one was the wiser. A few hacks did a bad job on poor women and that's where you got your stories about back alley abortions.
