SC Sheriff defies Obama order to fly flag half staff for Nelson Mandela

One of the positive things that came from Mr. Mandela's passing is how it brings to the surface the racism he fought against his entire life.

social media is great in the sense that it really shows how certain people are. It really does.

Once I thought the flag was lowered for 'national' issues. I suppose flags all over the world are lowered to show respect to other nations? Not sure what the protocols for the global community may be.

where does that power come from?

POTUS can order it, but there is no legal obligation for States or other entities to comply. Force would be in contrary to the First Amendment.

Sheriff Rick Clark told The Greenville News that he has ordered the flag be raised at the end of today because he said the honor of lowering flags to half-staff should be reserved for Americans.

Keep it classy Republicans. In ultra right wing upstate South Carolina, a sheriff has decided to defy President Obama's order to fly the flag at half-staff for Nelson Mandela. He says only US citizens deserve that. Wow, way to stay classy and honor one if this Earth's most noble humans to have lived on it.

On a BRIGHTER note....you right wingers can relax. See? Police DO NOT have to follow Obama's orders. They are not under his Chain of Command. So, he cant order them to do shit, like take yer guns.

Only the military, through martial law, can do the nightmarish stuff you think the gubmint is gonna do to you. Yet....you always support massive funding and NEVER cuts to the very entity that is the only capable one of inflicting true tyranny on you. Hmmmmm.

Which is why all the right wing fanaticism about tyranny is nonsense. The cops don't have to do shit the president says. He can only order the military or federal agencies to do stuff. I'd think that RW sheriff would maybe do it just out of honor for such a great man, even if he doesn't "have to". That would be the whole part about doing it in Mandela's honor.
