Because those issues were not understood back then, and people stayed quiet because they knew they would be rejected, not accepted.

As long as people have what it is that makes them what they are born as, male or female, that is what they are.

P.S. And to me, that is what they will always be, no matter what it is that they do to try and physically change themselves. You are still a blonde even if you have dyed your blonde hair brown for example.
