Holy crap !

Neither of them would go over 150k here. Our $9 hr min wage buys a helluva lot more than your $15 hr min wage.

LMAO

The new minimum wage increase to $15/hour will inevitably result in large scale layoffs, and business shutdowns. There is no way some businesses can continue to operate, and generate profit with this increase.

A job-killer for sure. Watch machines come in and the public make their own burgers and fries, just as they get their own drinks from machines. Hey, this is the goal of socialism. Kill capitalism.

For those who know little about Seattle, it is probably the closest in progressive attitudes, as is, California. Need I say more...:eusa_whistle:

Among those paid by the hour in 2013, 1.5 million were reported as earning exactly the prevailing federal minimum wage. About 1.8 million were reported as earning wages below the minimum. Together, these 3.3 million workers with wages at or below the minimum represent, respectively: 1.0% of the population, 1.6% of the labor force, 2.5% of all workers, and 4.3% of hourly workers.
Minimum Wage in the United States

It is estimated that there are currently approximately 17 million university and college students in the United States.
How Many College Students Are in the US - Ask.com

It appears that under 5% of workers in the U.S. have wages at or below the minimum wage. That is less than 16 million Americans. Since there are approximately 17 million college/university students in the U.S., my guess is most of the less than 16 million on minimum wage are likely students.

And now you know why we want the minimum wage raised.

Won't help, the pressure is way to high, the 450k house will simply go to 550k. More will move in, rents will rise and your 15 per hour will be $6 in reality.

Enjoy the higher rent and fewer jobs.

Again, we have the highest minimum wage in the nation and we sure as hell didn't lose jobs because of it, if anything we've grown much larger since we raised the mw and indexed it for inflation.

Yeah, things will go up, but everybody will be paying the difference, therefore it will be a small difference. You just don't want to pay an extra 50 cents for your Pizza, fine, don't order one.

What has anyone done to earn this increase in wage?

They work, a hard demanding job. What the heck kind of question is that? This is supposedly the richest country in the world. In the richest country in the world, the lowest payed worker should make a living wage.
What does the wealth of the nation have to do with anything?

If a job provides a value, then the wage for that job is based upon that value. What has anyone in Seattle done to increase the value of that job that they deserve this raise?

You don't get wages just for showing up.

You don't see the problem. It's not the wage, it's the cost of living. Both will go up and you end up with a net zero gain or less. You can't live in a very desirable location and expect minimum wages to make any difference.

We have hundreds move here from California and finding out how much better they can live in fly over country.

Oh please you don't actually believe the CEO's of corporations earn 500 to 1000 times more than their workers? Nobody buys that crap.

If you want a healthy economy, you need to put the money in the hands of the people who spend it, not the people who put it in their off shore tax havens.

If the job, education, and experience didn't demand it, then they wouldn't get it. Besides, as most of you overlook. Some CEO's work for a dollar a year salary and get paid in stock options. They make 20k times less in wages than the average joe.

Your envy is showing and it isn't pretty.

Now, since you don't seem to be able to answer My question, I'll say good night to you.

I lived in Seattle for many, many years. I've also traveled to many of the most beautiful cities in the world. Seattle is one of them and is a very livable place. It attracts a highly educated populace and is home to Bill Gates and Microsoft, Boeing, the corporate offices for companies like Starbucks and Amazon, etc. The cost of living is high, and this minimum wage is simply meant to be a reasonable, livable wage based on the cost of living. The employers have years to adjust to this: it isn't going to happen from one day to the next. There was a thread a while ago on minimum wage. I calculated what it should be based on what I knew about the cost of living where I had lived in Seattle. I came up with $15. So, I think this is quite reasonable. If it costs less to live somewhere else, then that city should adjust its minimum wage accordingly. Of all the cities in the US I've been to, and it's quite a few, I would not want to live in most of them. I'd prefer Seattle over most US cities because the region is far more beautiful than most others.

It's great, the minimum wage has gone up too slowly in the past several decades, as more and more goes to the CEOs.

The percentage of minimum wage earners is less than 5% nationally. It is at 0.8% in the state of Washington. Characteristics of Minimum Wage Workers: 2012
