Shrinking Utah's Bears Ears National Monument would be one more broken promise to Native Americans

Zinke spent just about an hour with the Inter-Tribal Coalition, whereas he spent hours with Mike Noel, a southern Utah politician who has tried to help businesses destroy the wilderness of the four corners area. He is a real prick.

"At the core of that understanding of the land is a sense of wholeness, of interconnection. As the Inter-Tribal Coalition said in response to Zinke’s announcement, 'The Bears Ears region is not a series of isolated objects, but the object itself, a connected, living landscape, where the place, not a collection of items, must be protected.'"

It is a fair, well balanced article.

The article talks about this is part of dismantling Obama's legacy.

So of course Jakey boy is upset. ....
Same nonsensical Sunni Man, the once and future Christian. Why would you oppose the monument?

Obama overreached with the National Monument designation, taking in far too many square miles of land.

How about this for "fair and balanced" story...

In January, actor Leonardo DiCaprio joined with other philanthropies to pledge $1.5 million for the monument, which is likely to receive few if any federal funds to manage it.
Native Americans prepare to battle Trump over Utah national monument

And I applaud DiCaprio! Put more of his wealth into these ventures and LEAVE federal funds out!
I mean if DiCaprio wants to save these monuments BUY THE LAND!
Make it into a control tourist attraction hiring the local Indians for "color"!
After all DiCaprio is a multimillionaire and he has other buddies that can go in with him. Go for it! Leonardo DiCaprio net worth: $245 Million Leonardo DiCaprio Net Worth

That's your opinion, of course, but his actions were well within the scope of the Antiquities Act of 1906. The way that Act is written, Trump and Zinke will have a hard time reducing the size of the Monument.

The better answer may be to look carefully at the Act to see if it needs to be amended.

I don't really know how much Zinke's proposed changes really change. The native americans don't want gas extraction over any of it. I'm all for preserving native americans antiquities, but I'm all for using the land so long as it's not sold or destroyed. And as I understand it, Zinke's proposals still keep archeological sites protected.

Dip shit, that is not used by American indians... by the way that term is the white mans term. The federal government cannot afford to run the place… Fact

Latest polling shows overwhelming support for Bears Ears
From Utah Diné Bikéyah

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Sixty-four percent of registered voters in Utah believe protections should remain in place for Bears Ears National Monument, compared to just thirty percent who say that they “probably” or “definitely” oppose the monument, according to a poll conducted in the wake of Interior Secretary Zinke’s visit to Utah earlier this month. The public opinion poll shows that Bears Ears National Monument continues to garner widespread support from Utah voters, despite efforts by opponents to turn public opinion against the monument.

UtahPolicy.com is reporting that the number of Utahns who want President Barack Obama to create a 1.9 million-acre national park at Bears Ears has doubled in just over a month, Polling still shows that most Utahns still do not want Obama to create such a park in southeastern Utah before he leaves office at the first of the year. However, the new survey finds that 33 percent of Utahns want a new national monument to protect the rugged landscapes and Native American artifacts in San Juan County. Previously polls on the subject have found 17 and 19 percent favor it. Sixty percent oppose designating a federal monument and 8 percent don’t know. This comes as Obama enters the lame duck stage of his presidency. Polling Shows Support for Bears' Ears Monument Doubled | Mid-Utah Radio

ohhhh, I think we're doing ok leasing fed lands. But I'm not sure that Zinke's proposal really puts archeological points at risk.

This is an old map of what the gop proposed

What is Bears Ears? Take a look inside Utah's new national monument

shit eating barry is yesterday's news...
leave Obama out of this... he is irrelevant. dipship
Lol

There are not many things Obama did that I approved of, but this was one of them. I don't think we need to have that much drilling and mining operations going on public land, and preserving areas such as Bear Paws is IMHO a good thing. I would also say that any private industry taking place on public land ought to have a certain amount of money set aside up front to pay for restoring the land when the operations cease. Which is not to say leases cannot be granted for private use, but we should be pretty sure the economic benefits are worth it.

NormantheMormon, silly statement as usual by you.

I am for preserving our national heritage as much as we can. Why you would want to tear Bears Ears up for corporate wealth is just crazy.

The Federal Government owns 63% of the land in Utah. That's at least 10-100X too much.

BFD if Bears Ears is a wee bit smaller.

Utah would only sell the land to corporations if it were to control of public lands.
