If this treatment doesn't take place in the ER, if the patient is admitted to the hospital, then I'm pretty sure the issues with ER payment don't apply.

I've got a number of friends/family that work in hospitals, and specifically in emergency rooms. From all I've gathered, yes, non-payment of emergency room bills is common. Using the emergency room when a doctor's visit would be appropriate is common.

Shoot Speeders is wrong. Its not "most people" and its sure as hell not "all Mexicans".

The last time I read it, the actual figure was 16% and only a very small number of that 16% were illegals. Nonetheless, its true that illegals can get prenatal care, deliver their babies and even get abortions. So can US citizens.

But yes, Reagan's socialist EMTALA does make it possible for people to get free care. Those who cannot or simply do not pay can still get treated in the ER.

That does not mean the care is free. It means that you can get away with not paying. There's a difference. The hospital will take information about where they can send a bill but read the sign over the head at the "admissions" desk. If you say you cannot pay, you will get the same treatment as I would get when I show my insurance card.

There's also an option that forgives a portion of the bill if you do pay. I can't remember the details on that though. Ask Shoot Speeders and he'll make something up.

A co-worker went in to get the same operation. Same Doctor. Same Hospital. Same Procedure. But she couldn't get insurance to cover it. They offered to do it for her for $17,000.

The problem with medical care is that it is based on what they think they can get away with charging you, instead of what things cost.

Absolutely true. I used to do billing for Charity Hospital in New Orleans. I had single authority to write down 50%. The guy above me had authority to write it down another 50%.
