Imagine this site in the mid-60s and 70s. What would you expect to see people threading about? ...It'll come to you.

Anti-war protestors.

Have we become so blaise' about war that we forget there's still wars going on US service people are fighting? Do we only ever think about it when some company uses veterans to sell their insurance products, or they're soliciting for donations?

We spend much of our time talking politics, but almost never to oppose a war somewhere. Once in a while we get something about the drone war, or outbreak of war, but never then ongoing opposition to the throwing away of America's best as with the people who volunteer to go fight it.

Out of sight, out of mind is a familar truism. And I can't help but wonder if this truth is why we have never-ending warfare now. No one wants to talk about it, and so no one's ever thinking about it. They're distracted like Dr. Carson said (albeit about other things) by media's sensationalism of trivium and minutia.

Are we part of the problem of never-ending war because we don't complain like our parents and grandparents did in the 60s and 70s over Vietnam?

Muslims are killing innocents all over the world including here. No complaints to go kill as many of them as can be found.

Fine point. Perpetual war has won the battle to be the new wallpaper. In the '60s that battle was very much in question.

So were the general social values of the time -- racism, sexism, repressive laws and mores against self-expression and individuality.

I suspect all of the above would be hot topics. They certainly were 50 years ago. Some still are, such as "sexual permissiveness", always pretending it's something "new" (I think there's a current thread...?)

When expand on this when time permits, doing 4 impossible things right now :) But there's always a way to justify the unjustifiable.

I can imagine seeing numerous threads on how women and "the negro" voting would cause the downfall of our republic. Kinda how gay marriage will be the catalyst this decade.

Should we be going after Muhammad Ali and Kareem Abdul Jabbar? Those 2 are always beheading people.

They'd be blaming blacks instead of homos and they'd be blaming young people in alternative clothing instead of jews and they'd be blaming welfare instead of the parasitical elite.

One thread would be

"That new show called the Jeffersons is so unrealistic"

Without the draft and the dozens of body bags coming home every week, not many people seem to care about our adventures these days.

A major, major grip at the time was the fact that 18 year old could be drafted to fight and die.

But they weren't allowed to vote on the policy that got them drafted and killed.

That was bullshit that the 26th amendment fixed in 1971. If that was happening now, young people would lose their shit.

Yes indeed. Which is a little like saying "the basement is flooded, so let's stock it with fish" -- they fixed the wrong end.

There's a body of scientific evidence that tv's coverage of those body bags and coffins coming off planes had a profound effect on American tolerance of the war. Or more precisely, intolerance of it.
Why I believe talking about honestly is so important. We show the bloody reality. If not for the horror or war there's little reason to object to it. But when you're constantly beinf reminded your loved ones are being blown apart that effects how you think about it.

True enough. Its one of the major Achilles heels of the US military. Probably one of its greatest strategic weaknesses: The low tolerance of Americans for casualties.

In order to fight a war you need two things: The capacity to. And the will to. Either alone is meaningless.
