those in power ensure they stay in power. And they are worried about trump!!!! HAThe problem with that is we end up with an unelected and unaccountable bureaucracy that has the power to in essence enforce policy for the government, no matter what the written policies are. Some would call that the deep state, a term that is used to ridicule, but one that is very real and very possible. There's a reason why an incoming president usually tries to get rid of as many holdovers from the previous administration as possible, because he/she doesn't want to hit opposition at every turn. There are extremes to be avoided, both on the autocratic and bureaucratic side. IOW, a president should not be dictator, but he/she should also not be figurehead to the real power, the entrenched bureaucracy.
Gerrymandering sucks big time. Districts should be drawn as regular polygons containing the same number of people whose only distinguishing characteristics are size. It would take a computer a few seconds to generate them.
