You can't write of a single debt (Or worse, demand someone else pay off your debt) because you don't feel like paying it.

One of my doctors used to complain about her student loan debt, I pointed out to her that another of my doctors ( who she was friends with by the way), didn’t have dime of student debt. The difference between the two was that the second doctor enlisted in the military after getting her BS, was assigned as a officer, was paid a salary while she went to Med school and did her internship AND Uncle Sam paid for her education. All she had to do was serve a term on active duty and the reserves after she got out. That’s called a win-win.

Why didn't people complain about the loans being "predatory" when they were made?

As soon as the program was announced colleges upped tuition and salaries, making these loans necessary. Students were left with no choice. The colleges also lowered entry requirements to enroll more students, taking full advantage of the windfall coming their way.
