Teacher Under Fire For Telling Student to Speak English

No, if they live in Germany I expect them to speak German.

No ... Kansas is where my mum grew up ... colonies in South Dakota and Manitoba in just our sect ... Penn is lousy with Amish ... she didn't learn Englishing until she got to Louisiana ... Nordic languages are common in the upper Midwest ... French in Maine and Louisiana ...

... and of course Spanish in all the former Spanish territories ... Texas to California ... we're too great of a nation to limit ourselves to just one language ...

But thank you for the compliment ... few would think what I type in here is Englishing ... it was my 25th birthday when the above mentioned mother stop nagging me about it ...

In school is not "in public." Out in public people "should" speak whatever language they damn well please. The teacher wasn't "too harsh," she was too stupid. A student's L1 can be a very useful tool in acquiring an L2.

So then in your opinion the teacher is required to learn Spanish?

There are a lot of American Indians in our school district and many of them do not speak in their native tongue but that is changing slowly... so the teachers in the high school have taken it upon themselves to learn the local native language....
Hispanics in the school are asked to speak English in class to help them learn it fluently... its not punitive... its called educating...
