A New Jersey teenager claiming that her mother and father tossed her out of their home and cut her off financially is suing them for immediate support, current private-school fees and future college tuition. The parents, meanwhile, say that daughter Rachel Canning, 18, moved out voluntarily after refusing to abide by their rules.

“We love our child and miss her. This is terrible. It’s killing me and my wife,” Rachel's father, Sean Canning, a town administrator and retired police officer, tells the Daily Record. “We have a child we want home. We’re not Draconian and now we’re getting hauled into court. She’s demanding that we pay her bills but she doesn’t want to live at home, and she’s saying, ‘I don’t want to live under your rules.’” The rules, he notes, include reconsidering her relationship with a boyfriend who may be a bad influence, being respectful, and abiding by her curfew. He and his wife, Elizabeth, who live in suburban Lincoln Park, about 25 miles outside of New York City, have kept their daughter’s car because they paid for it, says Canning, and he admits that they did stop paying Rachel's tuition at the private Morris Catholic High School. A hearing is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in the Morris County Superior Court.

How much money her parents have doesn't have a damn thing to do with whether or nor they have to spend it on her.

If there is any abuse ... Then take it to the authorities and prosecute it as a criminal offense.

Well, the outstanding tuition is for a high school and the parents would have to pay for that--one would think. Probably not the car. The father said that the college fund is still open but is dependent on her acceptance and admittance into a college. So, it isn't closed she just wants access to it. The father of the friend wants the parents to pay for living expenses? With emancipation kids have to prove that they can financially care for themselves, but that would open the door to all kinds of crap. Why isn't Morris Catholic High School paying for her living expenses? They told her not to return home.

He said that he and his wife are beside themselves that discord with their daughter has reached this level.

Rush-Masuret and Sean Canning said that Rachel was seeing a therapist long before moving out and is supposed to take medication.

In his court certification, John Inglesino wrote that he believed Rachel’s stay in his home would be short and temporary. He wrote that his attempts to speak to Sean Canning about financial obligations to his daughter have not been fruitful and he and his wife, Amy, believe Rachel is “emotionally distraught by her parents’ sudden rejection of her....”

You can be fully emancipated from your parents.

You can work. sign contracts etc. Drinking is no required in order to do any of the things necessary to be emancipated and autonomous.
