The targets of violence are "those who disbelieve" - further defined in the next verse (13) as "defy and disobey Allah." Nothing is said about self-defense. In fact, the verses in sura 8 were narrated shortly after a battle provoked by Muhammad, who had been trying to attack a lightly-armed caravan to steal goods belonging to other people.

Quran (8:59-60) - "And let not those who disbelieve suppose that they can outstrip (Allah's Purpose). Lo! they cannot escape. Make ready for them all thou canst of (armed) force and of horses tethered, that thereby ye may dismay the enemy of Allah and your enemy." Ok I have been friends with many muslims in my lifetime. One of my best friends in high school was muslim. Many muslims do not think the Quran should be interpreted literally like you think. Yes extreme groups like terrorists think it should, but I have met so many very peaceful very law abiding muslims who loved their Christian friends and were really good people.

There are extreme Christian groups who think the Old Testament should be taken literally. There are insane passages in the Old Testament like if your son disobeys him then take him outside and stone him to death, I don't think anyone believes today. Even insane passages in the New Testament most Christians do not take seriously. For example it says in New Testament that women are not to talk in Church. Most Christians do not believe that we can really speak in tounges or perform miracles.

It is the same Idea with the Quran. Your totally misunderstanding how Islam is practiced today in America by most Muslims. You see these crazy Muslim Extremist groups and assume that is the way all Muslims believe. Most people who see really crazy Christian Extremist groups don't say "oh that is what this group of Christians believe therefore all Christians must believe this!"
