That was out of control spending. Reagan agreed to some tax increases if he got spending cuts in return. He never got the spending cuts. However he managed to slow the growth in spending. The deficit dropped from $300 billion to $149 billion when Reagan left office.

Reagan raised taxes 18 times. He did so because it was good policy and that he created the largest debt ever by a president at that point.

The letter from the CBO is in response to two REPUBLICANS who requested an estimate of the costs of THEIR changes to BBB.

The CBO informed them that if their changes were implemented, it would cost $3 Trillion.

The CBO told them the version that was passed in the House only adds 0.2 trillion to the deficit.

In other words, the REPUBLICAN version costs $3 trillion while the DEMOCRAT version costs $0.2 trillion.

They have been explaining it to him again and again and again and again.
