Remember Prius has been around for a decade so they have quite and advantage. When you look at the a volt a and a Prius side by side there are comparisons to be made.
The volt is the car of the future. They are better built, better engineered, safer and have technology the Prius just doesn't have. The Volt is more expensive but since it is a first generation car this is bound to come down and then there is a simple question of value.
The volt is more like a diesel electric locomotive in that the the gas engine is used mostly to run a generator that charges the battery. I am not totally sure but I don't think the gas engine drives the car much directly, if ever.
The volt is an absolute joy to ride in. The suspension is rather stiff but it pays off in superb handling. The interior looks more like a Cadillac than a chevy.
It may be that the clean diesel can give both of these a run for their money for economy. As for me the only thing the volt lacks is the price. That's quite a bit but they are beating their sales projections.
