Obviously, Marx is associated with his work, The Communist Manifesto....but I am trying to discuss how his original ideas are different from the Soviet-style Communism of the 1950's through the 1980's and today. He did not believe in state-sponsored totalitarianism as the soviet union has practiced it where no real group has power except the leaders.

Marx was a neer-do-well that never held a paying job for any extensive period of time. His writings are those of a crazy man. Contradictory, and not well thought out. Communism is not the primary problem with Marxism, Marxism is the primary problem.

Marxism is designed to appeal to the worst attributes of humankind, and leads ultimately to the ruin of any who practice it. It glorifies mediocrity, and punishes achievement. That is a road map to disaster. For the most part, men do not labor because they love to labor. Students do not study because they love to study. They do it because they believe that labor and study will improve their individual lives. take away that reward, and you get less labor and less study.

Few young men and young women are going to spend eight to ten years of their lives studying hard and perfecting their medical knowledge to get the same pay and benefits of a ditch digger. And, the ditch digger isn't going to dig any more ditch than necessary to get his soup bowl and place to sleep.

In any successful economy someone has to allocate capital to meet the needs of that economy. That someone is either government or private individuals. A capitalistic economy is far superior to any other economy in the proper allocation of capital to ensure that the economy is successful. The individual economic decisions of millions of people, all working in their own self interest are far superior to the efforts of the best trained bureaucrats.

Most people in the academic world, internationally call him brilliant, even if they do not agree with him...self-interest= greed, usually...

I think (as do most scholars of political science and economics) Marx analysis of capitalism and governments of his day was pretty spot on.

I don't think his proposed system of government and economics works well.

And as to his predictions of the future?

Pretty weak.

Marxism has exactly the same weakness that every other form og government has.

It has to be manned by human beings who have their own interests in mind.

That's what screwed communism, and that's what screwing our modern form of capitalism, too.

Bring me a completely new form of government and economics and human nature will find a way to screw up that system, too.

If you read into Marx, socialism wasn't intended to be a sustainable form of government. It was simply a bridge to transition from capitalism to communism.

As to why it never has and never will work, S.J. summed it up pretty well:

Put whatever label on it you want, but it's all the same when it comes right down to it. Power hungry people seeking to control the citizenry to enhance their own lives in the name of equality. The end result is the government lives in luxury while the people live in poverty. Our current president is a perfect example.
