The Girl From Ipanema

Translation of original lyrics

Look! What a beautiful thing, most graceful
It's a girl who comes and goes;
In sweet swing, (on) the beach.

Girl of golden tan from the Ipanema sun,
Your sway is more than a poem;
It is the most beautiful thing I've seen go by.

Oh, because I'm so alone
Ah, because everything is so sad
Ah, the beauty that exists
The beauty that is not mine alone
Also walks alone...

Ah, if she only knew that when she passes
The smiling world is filled with grace
And it stays more beautiful
On account of love...

My 2nd wife was a nurse in Rio before emigrating to the States. Most of her free time was spent on Ipanema.

I love the song still today. But, I never had the faintest idea she was real!

Here's the story @ The Girl From Ipanema-Song inspired by a 19-year-old Brazilian girl.

Wonderful song and story.

But for the overbearing sax solo...

C'mon now. Gimme a break. One of the best sax players ever!

Sure he's a good player. It just doesn't fit the rest of the song.

It's like... singing.. singing... singing.. SAX... singing...

I get that he dug Gilberto's new idiom and wanted to be part of it, but the arrangement just doesn't mesh aesthetically with that instrument. There's no way to do with the sax what Gilberto was doing with everything else; it just doesn't possess that kind of subtlety. Getz worked better with Jobim and a band.

IMHO.
