Children are innocent. They look to adults to guide and protect them in a world that is full of threats. As Anne Frank once said, people are basically good and in most cases they do the right thing for children who depend on their decisions. But people are also basically bad and they can succumb to things that blind them to the suffering of their children.

This brings us to contemporary society, amateur sports and the modern Olympics. The Greek Olympics were brought back to the people early in the last century with hopes to include aspiring athletes from all over the world. There are five Olympic rings, to represent the five continents.

In those early days athletes who wanted to develop natural talent had to knock on doors and go to local groups to raise money to travel to Olympic venues. They sometimes had to ride on cargo ships to get there. That was before television and lucrative endorsements from product advertising. Then advertisers realized there was a ton of money to be made by bringing acrobats into the games to replace athletes turning it into a money-grabbing circus.

The Olympics lost its original purpose which was a place where the hard work, individual spirit and respect for fellow competitors could be demonstrated. Today the Olympics rings can be described with five of the seven deadly sins: Pride, envy, greed, gluttony and thanks to Dr. Larry Nassar and particularly to his gold-digging enablers, lust.

Advertisers and parents salivated in the 1970’s when Nadia Comeneci started scoring perfect 10’s in gymnastics competition and this is when the Sutter’s Mill of the modern Olympics really took hold. The circus that was dying from the public disgust of mistreatment of animals simply migrated to televised Olympics and transformed to the mistreatment of children.

Those female children are to be lauded for speaking up about their torment at the hands of people they trusted. But they need to understand that mommy and daddy had visions of untold fame and fortune dancing in their heads when they were told to be quiet and do what the doctor said. They couldn’t see the signs because they were blocked by bigger dollar signs.

The circus has always been a dirty place run by dirty people-so much for the Olympic spirit-it’s not about the children; it’s about the money now. Sometimes those you trust are your worst enemies.
