With Nuclear Deal Dead, Containing Iran Grows More Fraught

When Iran agreed to a deal in 2015 that would require it to surrender 97 percent of the uranium it could use to make nuclear bombs, Russia and China worked alongside the United States and Europe to get the pact done.

The Russians even took Iran’s nuclear fuel, for a hefty fee, prompting celebratory declarations that President Vladimir V. Putin could cooperate with the West on critical security issues and help constrain a disruptive regime in a volatile region.

A lot has changed in the subsequent nine years. China and Russia are now more aligned with Iran’s “Axis of Resistance” to an American-led order, along with the likes of North Korea. When President Biden gathered the leaders of six nations for a video call from the White House on Sunday to plot a common strategy for de-escalating the crisis between Israel and Iran, there was no chance of getting anyone from Beijing or Moscow on the screen.

The disappearance of that unified front is one of the many factors that make this moment seem “particularly dangerous,” said Vali Nasr, an Iranian-born professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, “maybe the most dangerous in decades.”

But it is hardly the only one.

President Donald J. Trump’s decision to pull out of the Obama-era nuclear deal triggered a predictable counterreaction from Tehran, and after a long pause, Iran resumed enriching uranium — some to near-bomb-grade quality. Today it is far closer to being able to produce bomb-grade material, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, than it was when the accord was in effect. Iran has consistently denied that it intends to build a weapon but has recently begun hinting at the need to bolster its “deterrent” against nuclear-armed adversaries.

I predict the reaction by The Following will be along the same lines as it was when His Orangeness sabotaged to border security legislation described as the most conservative bill to address the southern border in 25 years. They'll claim, as idiotically as Don did, that the Iran deal was no good. And now we see the result.

Ah, what a crock of shit. Go give Iran billions more in appeasement bribes fool.
Gosh, you nitwits have used denial so many times.........can't you come up with another way to excuse Don's moronic, dangerous, reckless foreign policy decision?

Tehran has surged ahead with its ballistic missile program, and several months before some of those weapons were unleashed on Israel this weekend, all the remaining United Nations prohibitions expired. Iran has not only emerged as Russia’s most dependable foreign supplier of military drones, but it has also improved its own drone fleet by drawing lessons from their use in Russia’s assault on Ukraine.

For Trump's cult, it's one more mistake of his making to stuff down the memory hole along with.............

adultery, pussy grabbing, bankruptcies, stealing from a charity, housing discrimination, a $25M settlement for fraud, inveterate lying, taking Putin's side in Helsinki, the budget busting tax cut for the rich, calling immigrants vermin, nepotism, a revolving door of cabinet members, abject incompetence, fawning over despots, trying to steal an election, the failed tariff policy, firing Comey, refusing to testify for Mueller, the pardons of people like Stone as a reward for not giving damning info to Mueller, spreading the Big Lie, botching the COVID response

THANKS OBAMA

Why do you think Iran would have followed any deal? Also Iran has broken US sanctions against Russia so how you gonna spin that?

Iran was following the deal. Once Trump broke it, that’s when Iran started enriching uranium above allowed limits again.

So what was the point?

Biden's been in office going on 4 years why hasn't he negotiated a deal with Iran? Also the US wasn't the only country involved in the Iran nuke deal, so why couldn't the other countries get something done without the US?

Biden has been working hard to negotiate a new deal but you got to understand that Trump made it so much harder. Iran signed a deal with Obama. They comply with the agreement. Then the next president kills it.

It makes any future deal far harder since there’s less trust that what they negotiate will matter in just a few years.

As for the other countries, they don’t control the banking system like we do and Trump literally threatened our allies for trying to work something out.

So the question remains, what did Trump accomplish? Nothing. He just made everything worse.

Can you outline the Iran deal for us and let us know how it benefited the US? And why we should make or trust a deal with a country whose leader promotes "Death To America"?

Well, for starters it kept Iran from enriching uranium beyond 3.67%.

I think Iran without nuclear weapons benefits the US.
