The rules of the game are always laid out beforehand.

In every sporting event the rules are written down long before. Changes to those rules are never applied to games that came before. Those changes are applied to the games yet to be played.

Let's take Baseball. The winner is the one who scored the most runs defined as people who go around all the bases and arrive back at home.

Complaining about the popular vote is like screaming your team should have won because they got more base hits. They may have but the rules laid out before the game started said the winner was the one who got more players home, not to first base.

For soccer it's the number of times the ball goes into the goal, not the time the team spent past midfield.

For the Presidency the winner was the one who got the most Electoral votes. When it looked like Trump could never break the blue wall and Hillary had it locked up this system was just fine. When the blue wall was breached all of a sudden the system is unfair. Now the winner should be the one with the most base hits.

The Democratic Party embraced urban liberalism and Wall Street over Main Street. Many people complained and were told to get an education so they could work on Wall Street. They were too stupid to be business people.

A record high percentage of minority voters picked Trump. This is why Hillary lost. There is no such thing as a guaranteed win in sports or life. You have to work for it.

Take the recent World Series for an example.

Over the 7 game series, the Cubs had 27 runs.

the Indians also had a total of 27 runs.

They need a playoff game to determine who has the most runs.

match play golf would be a good example.
You could shoot par golf.
But if the other guy wins 5 holes you lose. even if his score is 200 and yours is 36
