[Again, your ignorance shows no bounds. My story, from 40 years ago, about an experience that I was, unfortunately caught up in, was to make a point.
It was also COMPLETELY IRRELEVENT to the point I was making. Today, those evil German socialist have a crime and murder rate that's a fraction of ours, their police rarely discharge their weapons, and they lock up very few of their citizens. Their prisons are much nicer than ours and surprise, surprise, they haven't had a death penalty in decades.
Did Germany get over on us by letting us defend them during the Cold War while they got rich? Yup. Was that relevent to the point I was making? Nope.
[I somehow get the feeling, however, that your unfamiliarity with events back then probably had more to do with your "unwillingness" to serve and you now sit back and pass "righteous judgement" on those who did.[
No, I served as a reservist from 1981 to 1986 and active duty from 1986 to 1992. So you'd be wrong. MOS 76Y30, got out as a Staff Sergeant. So you'd be wrong about that, too. I respect anyone who served, but an MOS doesn't necessarily give you a brain.

Pity. living history is always preferred to reading about it, don't you agree?
Not really. Some people live history and still don't get the point. I look at the cold war differently. In order to "defeat" an economic system we didn't like, we empowered religious radicals in the Middle East, who have proven a greater danger to us than Communism ever was.
