Sorry that you don't know Hebrew.
Nepes the word used in translation means
breath. You take ear plugs, blind folds, put on oven mits on the dog or yourself and neither can feel, hear, or see outside of one's processor (the vessel body).
Once your brain (memory processor) goes all memory and breath (nepes)dies and as Psalms says, no more memory in death.
What do you think the Judaic concept of Resurrection was about?
We teach Creators creation (God) Life worship you guys teach adversary life and opposite having "lived" (devil) worship=power of death where we have no more breath or memory. Do I have to do a Monty Python's dead parrot skit to get you to understand what death is?
Common reasoning, science, computer technology teaches us that memory and thought processes and the conveying energy all requires a processor.
Our processor brain and vessel body once gone is liken to the computer hardrive and motherboard burning out.
There's no more thought, memory until you place that back in a new fresh vessel.
The Judaic teaching of Resurrection is to be able to see and be rewarded for what your good deeds brought a more perfected (paradise) in life, not in death.

Deuteronomy..Devarim: 30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day,That I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse; Therefore choose life, that you may live.....
Death was & is seen as unatural and was seen as something man could eventually overcome while working for a paradise in life by following a simple path of righteousness.

The creation of man in the essence likeness(reflection) of that power of life (essence/spirit) we call G-d is then giving back that essence (spirit) to G-d at death (because it is not physical it never dies, it remains eternal that spirit).

That's what King Solomon meant when he wrote, "The dust will return to the ground as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it." (Ecclesiastes 12:17)

“Soul in the OT [Old Testament] is nepe_s Nepe_s comes from an original root meaning to breathe, and thus since death is without breath then the soul (breath) ceases after death. “Dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19) Num. 6:6, 9:7, Lev. 21:11 – a dead body is a dead “nephesh”As scripture tells us, when you die the body goes back to the dust of the earth (Ecc 3:20) and the soul (breath) or spirit (nature of your being) also dissipates into the energy surrounding this, our layer of existence, the earth(Ecc 12:7, Psalms 22:29 & 104:29-30, Ezekiel 18:4 & 20, Joshua 10:28-39)Our Spirit (which is an essence of our being & not an energy) shouldn't be portrayed as an energy, for even if it was described as such it could not escape from this earth or have any senses or conciousness without a processor for it, which is what our brain is. We were formed from processions, layer after layer of micro realms to have concious energy, by placing the soul into the body, which acts as the processor, otherwise there would be no "Life" to experience.

i find it interesting that although the soul is claimed to be many things by many different and diverse groups that the hebrews explained it more in terms of breath then anything else... If one is to look at our lungs spread out it would look like a giant tree which ironically if one is hung up on a tree ( is accursed by gd) which is probably the deeper meaning to be hung up on your fate as a soul bound to one who was hung on a tree...Ironically in Isaiah 26 we are told and warned about this among other places and we are told in Isaiah 26 verse 19 that it is only in the " night" that we will be given back a bodily reserection which is clue enough for any paying proper attention to the deeper clues...

all beings have a Spirit ... no blade of grass from the beginning to the present and for all eternity will ever be the same.

.

Our "spirit"(nature) about us can be reflected and transfered through our influences, writing, thinking (philosophy), ideology, social science, etc but is not an entity of rememberance or ghostly image which by the way is still a form as it has to reside somewhere on another plane. Everything always has a process, if you disregard defining or discovering a process then you are an easy tool and fool for magic tricks, selective recognition, and outright lack of foresight by the spewers of "just have faith" liars & make believers.

Yeah it has breath.
Seek life not death,
doesn't get any simpler- I mean really the mirror opposite having "lived" is "devil".
