It's happened a couple of times to me in the last week or so. Go to a restaurant, not a five star gig but a chain, you order your food and pay at the counter and they bring it out to you. You are prompted to tip before you even see the food or the server does any work.

The first time I just did it without really thinking about it until I sat down.

So the second time I didn't tip at the counter, deciding to wait and see how the food and service was. It was fine, and I left a decent tip. Then the kid came over a bussed the tabel as we were going out the door and looked surprised, glanced around, and put the money down the front of his pants as if he was stealing it.

SO I guess it's tip up front or nothing for the server.

And I hope the kid bussing tables doesn't have any part of food prep.

Preemptive tipping sounds like some kind of socialist bullshit. But this does present a teaching moment. What happens to the tip money at the end of the night? Under the socialist system the money is evenly distributed among servers regardless of how well they did their jobs (thereby de-incentivizing good work and encouraging mediocrity). In a communist system the restaurant (I.e., the state) keeps the tip money and tells the staff to get fucked.

If you pay for takeout with a credit card some scanners offer you several tip options. Be a man and just pay for the food and quit clogging up the USMB with your whining.
