But it's also more specific than that.

We have ideological groups that glom on to our government and try to make it their own.

The Neo-Cons, come to mind.

Reagan is the closest thing to a statesman I've seen in my lifetime, but he was detached, he had all kinds of rats in his nest and didn't even know it. So one could say he was kind of dreaming about being a statesman - but at least he acted the role, played the part.

But the Neo-Cons who flourished in his administration, weren't elected. Heck, they were barely even Republicans at that point.

It occurs to me, that maybe it's the 'un"-elected types we need to be watching.

The elected ones, we already know what they're doing, they're on the news every night.

But the unelected ideologies, they can operate in secret. No one even knows who they are till it's way too late.
