Vance defends telling Harris to ‘go to hell’ for nonexistent cemetery criticism

The GOP vice-presidential candidate said an Arlington cemetery worker pushed aside by a Trump aide does not deserve an apology.

Former president Donald Trump’s running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, doubled down Wednesday on telling Vice President Kamala Harris to “go to hell," falsely repeating that she had feigned outrage over an altercation between Trump’s campaign and an Arlington cemetery worker when she had not.

U.S. Army Issues Statement Criticizing Trump Campaign Over Cemetery Dispute

The statement said Trump’s staff “unfairly attacked” an Arlington National Cemetery employee.

Here’s the latest on the presidential race.

The Army on Thursday criticized the conduct of members of former President Donald J. Trump’s campaign in a statement about a confrontation at Arlington National Cemetery this week, in which campaign staff clashed with a cemetery employee who was trying to enforce a prohibition on political activity.

Participants in the Trump campaign’s wreath-laying ceremony on Monday “were made aware” of that prohibition, but “an A.N.C. employee who attempted to ensure adherence to these rules was abruptly pushed aside,” the statement said. “Consistent with the decorum expected at A.N.C., this employee acted with professionalism and avoided further disruption.”

It added, “This incident was unfortunate, and it is also unfortunate that the A.N.C. employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked.” A Trump spokesman had disparaged the employee and claimed she was “clearly suffering from a mental health episode.”

At Arlington, Trump Returns to the Politics of the ‘Forever Wars’

The 2024 presidential race is the first in 24 years without a major American ground war, but Donald J. Trump continues to stoke division over the post-9/11 conflicts that helped give rise to his movement.
Federal law prohibits political activity, including any photography, at any military cemeteries. A Trump spokesman claimed that the cemetery officials were, in his mind, "clearly suffering from a mental health episode."

Political historian Allan Lichtman joined Scripps News on Wednesday to discuss the incident.

"There's clear federal law on this, and there's good reason for it," Lichtman said. "We should not be exploiting soldiers for political purposes."

"Whether or not Donald Trump has some family member allegedly giving him permission is absolutely irrelevant. Staffers at Arlington are absolutely right. You cannot use the cemetery, the graves, for a photo op for a political campaign. That violates federal law," Lichtman said.
