Last week, UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) prevented UN United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Mr. Ali Al-Za’tari and Commissioner of Humanitarian Aid, Sulayman Abdel-Rahman from entering Aserif Locality, North Darfur State on the pretext of insecurity and violence in the area.

Mr Sulayman has lashed at the surprising decision which violates mandate given to the peace keeping force which behaved as if it was authorized to craft its own policies in the region.

According to the mandate, UNAMID ||s task is contribute to the protection of civilian populations and prevent attacks against civilians in collaboration with the Government of the Sudan which have rejected the mission from the very beginning because the situations at that time were controllable without peace keeping force.

Seven years ago, US department of State allegedly accused the Sudanese government of shelling the civilians to justify deployment of the peace keepers.

International law experts have affirmed that peace keeping force anywhere are not entitled to make decision or policy because that could drag it into confrontation with the host country.

Moreover, the peace keeping force is always protected by the Sudanese authorities from the frequent attack by the Darfuri rebels movements. This indicates that the Mission is unable to protect even its personnel.

The peace keeping mission has complained many times of rebels attacks while what runs on the ground reflects otherwise. The Sudanese government accuses the peace keepers of collaborating and providing the rebels with weapons and supply.

UNAMID||s move may coincide with imminent resolution by the Security Council that could give the mission more powers due to the alleged rising tension in the region to clamp down on the Sudanese government in Darfur on the one hand and in South Kordofan and the Blue Nile on the other hand.

The dirty game aims to draw the attention of the international community to the alleged rising violence in the region and pressure the Sudan Sudanese government negotiate the rebels in South Kordofan and Blue Nile and abide by the joint cooperation agreement.

The UNAMID||s decision is a prelude to further episodes known for the blue helmets.
