Moderate Muslim is about the same concept as moderate serial killer. There are those who act literally on the commands of the Koran and the Hadith, and those who leave the action to others. Islam is a violent creed that uses murder, rape, and slavery to rule over others.

There are no moderate serial killers, no moderate Nazis, and no moderate Muslims - these are an oxymoron.

Muhammad taught that one can lie to protect the religion (you notice he said the religion, not the individual).
A deity is supposed to be all-powerful, all-knowing and absolutely cannot lose. Therefore, he/she/it would not want you to lie to protect its religion, as it and its religion cannot lose, no matter what you do.
Now, if the devil wanted to try and win, he would want you to lie to protect him and his teachings. After all, he can lose.
When Muhammad was in danger of being killed, he denied his religion and when his followers asked him why he lied, he said that the devil told him to lie. God would have him only speak the truth, even if it meant his life.
