"Semper Fi" is short for Semper Fidelis, the motto of the Marine Corps meaning "always faithful". Only Marines get to greet each other with the phrase.

And a common bastardization about 3 decades ago was "Semper Gumby", for "Always Flexible".

Of course, I also got a chuckle the first time I went to Disneyland after I joined, and saw the motto for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

I guess "semper" is used a lot". The motto of the state of Virginia is "Sic Semper Tyrannis" "Thus Aways to Tyrants".
