A Florida agriculture teacher, Dewie Brewton, is on paid administrative leave after being accused of drowning two raccoons in front of his science class.

The Forest High School teacher in Marion County lowered two raccoons in cages into trash cans filled with water after the animals killed some chickens that the students were raising for class.

Why should this man be allowed to teach any child.

An agriculture teacher in Florida allegedly drowned two raccoons and an opossum with help from students, school officials and parents said.

Dewie Brewton, who teaches at Forest High School in Ocala, was placed on administrative leave with pay and removed from the classroom “pending the outcome of a district investigation,” Marion County Public Schools officials told the Ocala Star-Banner.

“We received statements that the teacher drowned multiple animals in front of students, and with student participation, because the animals were nuisances to the ag program at the school,” spokesman Kevin Christian said.

One of Brewton’s students who attended Monday’s class came home in tears after the raccoons were drowned and the opossum was later killed “just for sport,” the boy’s mother told WKMG. The critters were thought to have eaten chickens raised by the agriculture class.

Perhaps this teacher should have prefaced the "demonstration" with a discussion of how KILLING ANIMALS is an integral part of our culture.

Chickens, pigs, cows, calves, turkeys, all types of fish and crustaceans, and even some more exotic animals are killed regularly for food, and only morons have a problem with it.

Deer, elk, bears, and other animals are killed regularly for sport, and only tree-huggers have a problem with it.

Rats, pigeons, mice, squirrels, and other animals are poisoned and/or killed routinely, as they are "pests," that spread disease, render our food inedible, damage our property, and so forth. Few people have a problem with it.

So while many of us are uncomfortable with the THOUGHT of killing "innocent" animals, our society does it literally all the time.

And now for a demonstration...

I see nothing wrong with this. It is truly a teaching moment.

My wife got her teaching degree in 1969. She was a professional and dedicated teacher for 30 years. Most of her teacher friends were the same way.

She never drowned raccoons as far as I know. If she did she never mentioned it.

How and arrow. Take an old two blade broad head and cut it bout 1/4”+- then screw a washer between the shaft and broad head. Sharpen all three sides, do the flat like a chisel. On a 25 pound bow this combo is deadly. 50 pounds and up will just destroy small critters.

part of the attraction of being a teacher is the security that comes with it; but even that is being taken away as pensions are being reduced and fazed out

we (conservatives) whine about liberals and people that are incompetent overwhelming education; yet many of us have no interest in doing what it takes to attract better candidates - ie; offering more money

that is not to say that we should dramatically increase salaries for current teachers; but raising the entry salary and where salaries can top out would absolutely attract better candidates (not talking about political views, but basic competence)

if we are going to do that, then we also need to couple it with a higher level of accountability though
