Washing machines/dryers prices up 17% under Trump (thank you, tariffs)

Wanna buy laundry equipment for your home? Good luck paying more than you used to, thanks to Donald J. Trump and his tariffs.
In this thread, we will come up with ideas as to how to lower said prices again:
Opinion | Trump’s tariffs are already backfiring

By "backfiring", you of course mean "working".

Move to China if you want those slave wage labor products. Sign up for the slave wage labor.

Also this will reduce the deficit by raising tax money. I always thought you loved taxes.

Love this sentiment...buy what the central government tells you to buy, or move to China and by what their central government tells you to buy.

I remember the days when socialism was seen as a bad thing by those on the "right".

When did the government tell you what you can or cannot buy? The only time government did that is after Commie Care was passed, and even then, you still had the option not to buy insurance. Nobody was going to lock you up.

Tariffs are the government's way of controlling what you buy, buy what they want or pay the extra price. Tariffs are the government's way of picking winners and losers in the economy, instead of letting the free market system do that.

Tariffs are about one thing, control. And the more control the central government has, the less freedom you and I have.

I seriously don't think government gives a rats ass what you buy. I think what Trump is doing is just trying to put us on a more level playing field.

If you and I both had banana stands across the street from each other, but you are paying higher taxes on your side of the street which makes your products less competitive than mine, is it wrong for your local government to lower your taxes to the percentage I pay in order to allow you to be more competitive?

Yes, with protective tariffs, some items will cost more, because they're not being made in dirt-wage factories overseas but by Americans who are earning a decent wage and benefits in American factories. And instead of part of the profits going overseas, all of those profits are staying here in our country. And those American factory workers, instead of working at some service-industry job making $10-$15 an hour, are making $20-$30 an hour and are able to buy more goods and services in their area.

I do wish one of you folks who keep bashing protective tariffs would explain why China has grown by leaps and bounds with a fiercely protectionist tariffs. China's growth rate has dwarfed ours for years, and yet China has some of the highest tariffs in the world. China understands that protecting your own industries and products is sound policy. We used to understand that as well.

Protective tariffs....that is code for "buy what the central government wants you to buy or be punished"

China has a socialist market economy, the central government has vastly more control over the economy than a free market economy like the US. This is why something like protective tariffs work over there, things like freedom of choice and an open market are a foreign concept.

I realize that many of you would like to see our economy become more socialist and the central government control more and more of it, but there are still a few of us that are not willing to trade away our freedoms to cut a trade deficit that is unimportant to start with.

But are we talking protective tariffs or equal tariffs?

A tariff is a tariff, no matter what name you give it.

People whine about Canada putting tariffs on our dairy products but totally ignore than in the US 70% of the revenue the dairy industry receives is via the government itself.

Why? Is the government buying a lot of milk?

But that is not what is happening. What is happening is the government is making the cost of your bananas higher so that mine will be more competitive with yours. Basically your taxes are going up so that both bananas cost the same, everyone will get to pay more for their bananas.

One thing a tariff can never do is lower the cost of anything.

Good luck paying more than you used to

Doesn't your trailer park have a laundry mat?

If you're worried about the cost of an appliance that you replace every 10 years--an appliance that only costs a few hundred bucks, you have far, far greater problems to worry about. Perhaps that double wide you're living in is too extravagant for your lifestyle. Oh wait, let me guess. You don't own your trailer, you're renting. Still think dropping out of school after the 7th grade was a good idea?

It is called subsidies, perhaps you have heard of them. They are a thing we complain about China doing.

U.S. dairy subsidies equal 73 percent of producer returns, says new report

Okay, let's go with that. But is it still wrong? I mean, we are not looking for government to tax us into submission. All we really want are equal rules for everybody, and when it comes to international trading, we don't make all the rules. Every country gets to make their own.

What I'm saying is that if our government is going to sell by the same rules as we buy, I can't see how that's corrupt or government control.

I am fine with free markets. But under free markets the government must withdraw its control of the border so free market can take care of it. Build a massive border and make sure that the capital remains in the country.

Since government has taken over that role, it must at least do something and not just watch our futures vanish to China. Your future jobs will be there, as a free market guy, you will love it!

Under a free market capital should not remain anywhere, it should flow between all markets. Capital that remains only in the country becomes stagnant capital. We tried that back in the 1800s, it failed.

You keep whining about jobs going away, yet here we sit at 3.8% unemployment with 100 threads a week on this forum alone that tell us how amazing the economy is. How is that possible with China taking all of our jobs?

The 1st step was eliminating job killing regulations, retaliatory tariffs is the second phase to more winning for the US workers.

Nobody wins when the central government take control of parts of the economy, and that is what tariffs are.

The central government already took control over the border. And since it's in power, it must use that power rather than throw its hands in the air, as we get raped.

This is not socialism, but common sense. Unless you want your future to be in China.

The biggest and best countries are by default the winners of trade wars, yet we have kept losing so much.

Trump and you all are wanting us to be emulating China, which has a socialist market economy. The more we copy them, the more we move towards socialism

Our country is in the 2nd longest period of economic expansion in its history. We have, as multiple threads on this forum tell us, record low unemployment and our economy is BOOMING.

Explain how that equals losing? If we are losing so much, how is our economy so amazing?

No, actually we want him to protect our national capital. If you have a problem with that, maybe China is the place for you. That's where all the jobs would be headed under your insane plan.

My insane plan is this weird thing called "freedom" and a free market. Perhaps you've heard of them, they used to be the hallmarks of this great country. But now we have people like you that want the central government to dictate to us what to buy and to punish us if we do not buy the right product made in the right place.

You want to take away freedom of choice and then you tell me to move to China. Fuck, I do not need to move there, people like you are turning our great country into China.

I love how you totally ignored the fact our economy is doing great right, prior to the socialist tariffs being put into place by our dear leader.
Perhaps you should move out since being an American is so hard for you.

That clown is on a government pension that's why he doesn't give a shit about American workers and private sector jobs.

I am too but I realize that it's not all about me. Most libwits can't make that distinction.

Not surprising you're okay with other governments controlling parts of our economy with fools fair trade.

Yeah, but those are all things that weaken America, so they are no problem for him.

Social security is an example where the government forces you to buy very shitty insurance.

Yet this "free market" guy can't get enough of it I bet.
You'll be okay there, skippy.

How is it fair to us to be exploited by communists who use children in manufacturing plants overseas?

You people are scumbags. Yup some of the items that we stopped making here because of the ridiculous restrictions on production and industry the left has saddled us with, we're going to start making again.

That's what independence looks like, you pathetic scumbags.
