Romney was an excellent candidate. True, he was not a conservative. But he was an accomplished man whom many thought could reach across to Independent and Democrat voters. The campaign was pretty good although not outstanding.
But the Democrat machine went into high gear and had the technological resources (read: help from the nSA) to motivate voters. And Romney didnt excite the base of conservatives, who largely stayed home.

With all due respect, Doc...Obama "says" he reads his briefings every day but doesn't he seem to be caught totally by surprise by a LOT of things? I question whether he actually DOES read them. I mean I seriously doubt that Valerie Jarrett gives him a "quiz" on the material every few days!
