You tell children that families have mommies and daddies. Even if mommy and daddy are not together they both love their children very much. Some men and women are deranged. Funny thing about that; the Catholic Church for centuries believed that being left handed meant a person was the servant of the Lucifer himself. They would forcibly make left handed people use their right hand. In Catholic schools, as late as the 70's, nuns would use rulers on the hands of anyone using their left hand.

Just because a behavior does not conform to your idea of normal does not make it abnormal.

I told my kids when they were old enough to ask. They will ask. I just explained that some people like boys and some like girls. when they got older they came back and asked how a gay couple could have children I told them via adoption of children that didn't have homes.

i think you should just teach kids about equality as a value. marriage equality is an extension of that. i think the first conversation i had with my son about marriage equality was when they were litigating prop 8. it made sense to him that our gay friends should have the same rights as all of our other friends. but he, and we, would have felt that way about anti-miscegation laws.
