What was the moment in time when the Democrats went crazy?

In 1972, the transformation of the Democratic party was complete with the nomination of ultra-liberal George McGovern, and Nixon's Southern strategy, that began the pull of conservatives out of the Democratic party.

I think it less that they all went crazy, and more that the crazy element gained the most power.

I would say it festered during the Reagan years, went quiet during Clinton, and blossomed during the Bush II era.

The Obama era let them get even more into the upper levels of the Democratic party, and Hillary's loss brought the remaining fence sitter over to the cuckoo side.
