My experience is the older the building, the more costly upgrades are. Elevators, fenestration, roofing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and computer wiring, lighting all cost more as refits rather than new construction. Unless the building has some historic significance to the institution (University Hall on the Ohio State campus comes to mind), it usually serves the school better to design for current needs rather than retrofit some antique.How old is "old"?Yet all the schools do here is ask for money to build new schools and teardown the old ones. Using buildings as scapegoats.
Does it matter, if they are properly maintained and equiped?
