They have noticed and acknowledged that 1 specific company in their state has been consistently successful / profitable, and they have decided to step in and 'seize' some of THAT individual company's profit as a 'tax', which allows them to help themselves to money they did not help earn from a company they do not own / run.


Maine Democrats Want $100 Million Tax On Poland Spring, Critics Warn It Will Hurt Economy

Democratic state representatives in Maine want to cash in on one of the state's consistently successful business -- Poland Spring -- by establishing a water tax that would be only for the popular brand, and raise more than $100 million in taxes for the state. But, many point out the unfairness -- crafting a tax specifically for one company -- and warn this idea will deter futures businesses from opening in the Pine Tree State.


Maine's explanation for the targeted tax on 1 (ONE) company?
-- They are successful. They have the money. We want some of it.

“We need the revenue,” the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Lori Gramlich, D-Old Orchard Beach, stated.


The state can not live within its own existing budget, and, like other states - especially liberal states, they are searching for every source of money available and every justification for taking some of it because there is no end to the list of items and issues they want to spend YOUR money on.

1. Like this water company is owned by "Nestles", and is NOT just a small local water company, it's the largest bottled water company in the world, one which is KNOWN for draining local aquifiers and water sources for profit.

2. The bill doesn't just apply to ONE water company, it applies to ALL water bottlers taking more than 1,500,000 gallons of water out of the ground.

Are you seriously suggesting that Nestles, one of the most profitable companies in the world, shouldn't have to pay for the additional costs they're imposing on these communities? Who the fuck do YOU think should have to pay for the new pumping equipment and the damage to the local water supplies. The citizens?

You right wingers seem to think that a company which needs educated employees, and massive amounts of infrastructure and protections to make money, shouldn't have to contibute to the costs of maintaining the government which is providing infrastructure and support to these businesses?

The right seems to think that individuals should all have to pay their own way, but corporations, who are the largest users of infrastructure and government services which they NEED in order to be profitable, should not have to pay their own way.

This wrong-headed thinking, that taxation is theft, when it is in fact YOUR share of the costs of living in a first world country, is why the USA continues to decline.

How many of those small water bottle companies in maine go through 1500000 gallons of water each year? Did you think about that? Probably not.
Poland spring already pays taxes. They have paid in more than 21 million. Employ over 2k people. Pay out almost 50m a year in salaries in benefits

Yes, we've read the "corporations good, taxes bad" rants from you fools for years. Taxation must cover the costs that the corporations inflict on the economy, and that hasn't been happening since Reagan changed the tax code and wealth started trickling to the top.

The transfer of wealth from working Americans to Corporate America and its owners, began in 1980 and conotinues unabated today. If corporations and the wealthy were paying their share, wages for workers wouldn't have stagnated for 40 years, and infrastructure in the USA would not be crumbling.
