Boston crime boss James "Whitey" Bulger was wrapped in a blanket and put in bed with his head on the pillow to make it look like he was sleeping after being choked and fatally beaten with a "lock-in-the-sock" inside his cell, multiple law enforcement officials briefed on the case tell NBC News.

NBC Investigations reported Wednesday about the apparent use of the "lock-in-the-sock," which involves placing a prison lock inside an inmate's sock and hitting the victim repeatedly. Several sources familiar with the investigation say that Bulger was hit repeatedly.

Investigators are working to build an exact timeline of events leading up to his death, how and why he was placed in the West Virginia lock-up and who is responsible for the killing.

I will not defend bulgar, according to all sources who knew him he was a monster.

However there is lot more to this and it it not cause to celebrate.

He was 89 he had few years ahead. He was only arrested 7 years ago after spending over a decade on the run and successfully hiding in plain sight in Santa Monica. Part of this was due to at least one corrupt fbi agent who covered for him and helped him escape capture. His age makes his incarceration almost a waste of time.

More importantly some one in federal federal corrections failed massively. As an inmate he was a ward of the government making them responsible for his well being. They knew he was a target and at risk. The max security prison he died at houses many of the worst and more dangerous criminals and has had several inmates killed in recent years.

Who turned their back so others could kill him and why? Why was he there in the first place as opposed to some other prison which may have been relatively safer? Some people will lose their job over this and maybe even face criminal charges over this.

In this day and age we have far too many people incarcerated. In fact most Americans will have a loved one incarcerated sooner or later or be incarcerated. This story is a frightening one of someone working in prison can simply side step the courts and execute someone.

I can't feel bad for bulgar but this shows why trump needs to reform prisons as he stated he would and we as a nation need to start rolling back some laws and send fewer people to prison.

Doesn't matter if one is left or right calling the us a free country does not work when we have the highest incarceration rate in the west.

And Bulger was a known snitch for much of his life -- it wasn't some FBI conspiracy to have him killed...
