It's more that Republicans are really good at using propaganda and wedge issues to get people to vote against their economic interests. By scaring especially middle class and low income white people with fears about gay people, immigrants, and religion, they get them to vote Republican. Republicans than in turn place our democracy up for sale to the highest bidder thanks to Citizens United. Ignorance might be a better way of saying it than stupid.
